CLEAN FOOTBALL. Ono of tho moBt pralaoworthy fea tures of Snturday's gamo was tho en tiro absonco of "dirty football" tac tics on tho part of 'both loams. Tho fact Is oxtromoly notoworthy and haB causod a great deal of favorable com ment. Not that we have boon accu tomed to boo spcotnclos of rank bru tality on tho homo gridiron, for that Is not tho case, but In the Colorado gamo all tho participants wore ox tromoly caroful to avoid unnecessary roughness. This speaks vory favor ably for tho control of (temper and is not tho least In derogation of fighting spirit so peculiarly osentlal for foot ball players and, in fact, ovory ono olse who is to succeed. It Is ono hing to play football like some raging wild animal and entirely another to oxor clso all tho control over passion that tho circumstances will permit. With out doubt many things seem unjusti fiable to an obsorvor which In reality aro po'rfoctly justifiable In vlow of tho circumstances and condemnation should procood only when tho facts RESULTS TELLv! At last Saturday's game tho new songs wore given tho first tost to de termine their ofllcacy as a means of rooting and thanks to tho leadership of tho chorus, tho result was far bet tor than was anticipated. Without question this wllf'bo the most popular form of tho rooting In tho futuro, be cause It has muc hto recommend it tha't is entirely lacking in other forms of rooting. It is up to the students to keep pushing football Bongs. Dramatlc'Club Try-outs. TURN DOWN PLAN (Continued from page 1.) sophomores, juniors, and seniors, se lected on some undefined principle, and giving to each of these groups a 'mastor as well as 'a local habitation and .a name.' "It promises rivalries, Jealousies, and political complications which will effectually extinguish all that wo havo of comfnon feeling among tho under graduates. For perilous possibilities, tho little finger of. the quasI-Oxford scheme looks thicker than the loins of the present club system. "Suppose the members of those residential quads aro- assigned to the different colleges, on their own appli cation or on tho application of their parents, according to tho scale of the room-rents in the different buildings, or the rates of board at the difforent tables. The result will inevitably be the creation of academic communi ties within tho same university on the basis of money." Dr. Van Dyke claims that those "academic communities" will destroy Princeton spirit, detaching the stu dent from tho university and attach ing him to his "quad." A FREE CATCH. How a Player May Prevent Injuries From Tackles. M.any, people who witnessed, the Col orado game 'Saturday wore mystified by the action of Half Back Minor of Nebraska in repeatedly signaling for a free catch of punts. It has been learned since tho contost that the Cornhusker player waB injured and was making signals for free catches In order to save himself from hard poundings which usually come when a player carrying tho 'ball is 'tackled. 'Walter H. Eckeraall Ib strongly in favor of using tho free catch for this purpose and has the following to say about it: "A point worthy of note Is the scarcity of free catches this year. After ono or two disastrous fumbles a quarterback should always signal for a fair catch, wherever the ball hap pens to come. Ho will thus suffer less of the results of nervousness or fright that bo often handicap punt catchers. It has boon tho rulo of backs to take a punt and attempt to run It back, no matter where an op posing tackle or tacklors may bo. In few cases has this been accomplished and generally the back has' received a rough throw, with itho resulting loss of several yards. A fair catch In such cases would give his team an op portunity to put the ball in play with out risk of losing a few yards, and it would B.ave the back making the catch many hard poundings by opposing players coming down tho Held at full speed. "This suggestion may solve a prob lem that has 'been perplexing players and coaches for many years tho erad ication of fumbling for practically all fumbling is duo to the, nervousness of backs when taking the ball with sev eral opponents closing upon them." Tho grasp of the clasp la cost. It's flat tho only abso lutely flat clasp garter h tho Ilrlehton. Milli :. ons of men know this buy them and wear them.
