"DON'T PUT OFF." There Is an unjustified, If not even an unjustifiable prejudice against drill ing noticeable among University men of tho .lower classes, who are most Intimately concerned with affairs mili tary. It seems to be almost a matter of tradition tlmt evory year a more or less numorous body of men seek to avoid this requirement by one means or another. A requirement that the authorities havo seen fit to make gen eral and one which is found most dif ficult to satisfy In any way other than tho usual ono. It Isxllfllcult to deter mine tho reason for tins feeling on tho part of some of the students. In some cases porhaps tho Ideals and general Influence of mllltnry science is felt to bo un-American, this attitude would have been moro nearly Justifiable in times past than no'w. It, however, Is not at all likely that the short time given to this work in tho college course would have any tendency to ef fect a chango in the peaceful habits of any one. But the remark recently mado by one of our distinguished pro fessors to tho effect that peace is best maintained by preparations for war 8ome Real Live News From Kimball's Institution Tho outlook for the School ofMusic this your is the brightest In the history of thiit institution. There Is an enroll ment or n.vr :b0 pupils, representing the following states: Nebraska. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Illin ois, Kansas, Iowa, New York, Colorado, Missouri and Washington. Director Kimball Is certain that before the end of the term twenty or twenty-five states will be represented In the list of students. The' University School of Music was renovated and placed In excellent con dition during the summer; Many of the rooms formerly used for dormitory pur poses have been converted into studios and It is expected that before the end of the year the entire second floor will bo put to the same use. The following new courses are of fered this year: Instruction of MubIc In Public Schools; Orchestral Instruc tion; and Instruction on the Flute, Saxaphone, Cornet, and Mandolin. The establishment of other now courses is being considered. It Is thought that an operatic school .will be established 'in the School of Music in the near future, thereby giv ing those tnlented in operatic lines an opportunity for home training. Arrangements have been made so that any University student who does not care to drill or play In the band can make his military requirement by orchestra work In the School of Music. This arrangement enables Director Kimball to procure much excellent tal ent that otherwise would not bo available. Football Men. All men out for football who have not completed drill requirements must put In an application for leave of absence and have the same signed HALLETT, Optometry Specialist GLASSES : FITTED Eye Sight Restor'd No operations. Hallett, Graduate Optician, 1143 0 Street should b6 seriously considered. In other Instances tho hour Is In convenlont, coming as it does so lato in the afternoon, but whatever may be the cause of this feeling, the fact still remains that drilling is at pres ent required In this University. In view of these circumstances ono should go about the affair cheerfully and try to got all the benefit possible out of the few semestors devoted to this training. When a person Btops think ing of how particularly distasteful or unpleasant a task is and devotes that same energy to properly discharging it the prominence of the former feeling will promptly be lost. A little taste of discipline of this nature has a very salutary effect upon tho minds in ad dition to broadening the experience. Another argument In favor of working off this requirement in the early years of the course is that a student's in- by Manager Eager and filed with the Military department. Convocation Program.
