It scorns tlvero Is altvays a cortnin class of those young men who take in tho annual encampment of tho Uni versity battalion who havo the notion that, unlesB they do something that proves how deep they can "plunge," they are admitting themselves to bo vory quiet, harmless boys and quite without' spirit. It Is said that certain Beatrice citizens were very much op posed to the return of the encampment this year to that city and that several students from the town wore Bent to other schools rather than to tho Uni versity Blmply because of the actions ? , ,.t-. mentioned and do tJhem -with a deal moro rfeftnesa than any University novlco (at least, It Is to bo hoped the word novlco can he used with that frord In front of it.) It can be put down very certainly that none attain much proficiency along this line with out decending into this red-nosed claBs. A University cadet has no business to do In camp anything he would not bo willing to do In Ills university or home life. And It is possible to relax, too, without getting overbalanced or unbalanced. Tho Unlvorslty of Minnesota re ceded from tho legislature this year moro than $1,400,000 for all purposes. This Includes $46,u00 for tho enlarge ment of tho campus, $25,000 for engi neering buildings, and an addition of $125,000 to tho salary account. This has permitted the raising of salaries of heads of departments from $2,700 to $3,500 with corresponding increase for other positions'. Ih addition, pro vision has been made for twenty eight new appointments In the university. Communication. Editor Nobraekan: 'Tho Corahusker does an uninten tional Injustlco to H. M. Benedict, '96, In saying that he was not an athlete In any sense whilo in college. Every one connected with tho University during Benedict's college course will remember him as the star baseball player of that time. Two Eastern college men, both ball players, one a Harvard baseball coach, who happen ed to visit mo and saw Benedict play in his last year, were enthusiastic over his work, declaring him to be the peer of any college ball player In tWe East at that time. Of course there are plenty who will maintain that a little of tho "rapid" way will not hurt anybody and that tho fellow who is so full of principles as to bo unwilling to Join in the sport is a very pmy, lifeless sort of a char acter. However, there are two ways of looking at such things. It is barely -possible that tho fellow who is ablo to go thru straight is evincing really moro square foundation than others.
