It looks as if there should bo no

letter was one written to E. B. Perry,

"There is no use trying to tell you
anything about this country. Until I
went home, I was supremely content.
I came back I was transferred to an
other section among the Tagologs.
They do not compare In any sense with
the Visayas" (among whom he was
stationed before), "not in any sense,
altho the books and history are tho
most progressive and furtherest ad
vanced. Not so. Emphatically not.
Where I am now stationed, altho with
in twenty-five miles of Manilla just
across the bay and with a daily boat
between the people are the worst of
the Tagalogs. They fairly hate the
ground you walk on. There Is scarce
ly one who would say 'good morning'
to you, If he did not think it was up to
him to say It. Consequently, we are
left strictly alone; and after some
time spent In trying to break Into
them, we leave them strictly alone.
"For four years now I have been a
provincial treasurer. I get along all
right. Our material life here, being so
near Manilla, and with regular and
easy transportation is much better.
"However, I shall probably cut it
out next spring. I presume I shall go
home by India, Egypt and Europe (did
Japan thoroly on my return here) and
spend some three months doing It.
Surely will If I can find a companion
of similar Inclination. Then having
twice encircled the globe, In opposite
directions, I think It will be up to me
to settle down and hustle."
