Nebraska, as aooond-class mail mattor
under tho Act of Congress or March 8,
1870.
It is understood that attacks are be
ing made upon tho Nebraskan from
certain quarters for advertising such
places as vaudeville theaters nnd pool
rooms. Godd! It Is n relief to know
some peopte are awake to tho kind of
'influence emanating from such resorts.
As for the paper,- its only excuse can
be that It "needs money."
It looks as if anybody would have
Ideas of culture strong enough to keep
him away from a public pool room,
yet there are a good many University
students who patronlzo such a place
there to spend n considerable amount
of time and money. One look at tho

general run of pool room society ought
to be enough to give any University
student decided opinions about it.
But there is another practice among
students which because of its wide
following is oven worse than tho ono
just referred to. That is tho practice
of making n round of all tho cheap
shows every week,
There 1b, perhaps, nothing that can
bo -labelled "bad" about them, but they
are so everlasting cheap .that to be
seen as -a spectator at one of them
ought to give a student, who Is sup
posed to haye some ideas 'Of what re
fined things nre, a feeling of his small
ness hte would not get oyer in a month.
A juggler comes upon. the. stage, does
a few 'remarkable "sttlnts," receives
grent applause from the street urchins
down In front and retires. Then a
couple VJf characters representing some
old Uncle Josh and tho witty servant
girl, dnnde a few Jigs of the sort that
are especially artistic, you know,
'cause somo of the delighted spectators
laugh until the tears flow, then go out.
Perhaps, there follows some very melo
dramatic semi-tragedy of the streets
where tho newsUby plays hero, saves
the family from starvation nnd does
the Impossible funny thing of pouring
half a sack of salt Into the baby's
soup! Tho pathos and the humor of
such productions are always character
ized by n vast deal of refinement, of
course. And tho performances, are
such as would naturally delight the
trained and cultured tastes of a college
man or woman!
A Nebrasknn reporter once "mak
ing" one of these performances, was
startled at hearing the whisper in his
'ear during an intermission, "Say,
neighbor, What tlhi6 do the saloons
close In this town?" Yet those who
insist most vigorously on the "culture
side of tho University are the very
ones to enjoy most keenly, It would
seem these ton-cent, third-rate, coarse
joke mints.
Take Notice.
Enthusiasm is running high. The
weathor prophet predicted only a
slight change on Monday, but ho was
a little behind the times. Tho ther
mometer in front of the Y. W. C. A.
