TIME TO 8TIR. Is Nobrnska retrograding? With tho resignation of Dr. Clements from the faculty nd with tho rumor that other prominent professors may follow, this question comes to Nebraska students with peculiar force. Each one re members how narrowly tho University missed losing such men as Dr. Ward, Professor Richards and Dean Pound not long ago. Three or four years ago Chancollor Andrews , received a ikittering offer, " rom Wisconsin and had financial fea'ih; alone influenced him ho nyould certainly have gone. Older students call to mind the loss of much suporlojto those offered;' liore; In other states the universities are coming more and more before the pub He eye as complete institutions worthy of tho most complete , support, Our University, it seems, does not hold wich a position. A few years ago, Nebraska Univer sity was accounted tho leading institu tion of tho kind in this section of the West. This was duo to tho fact large ly that while other stato legislatures wore xlividlng their appropriations into two parts, one for tho agricul tural school and tho other for the uni versity proper, Nebraska was uniting tho two schools into one and so lump ing tho appropriations. In this way tho University of Nebraska grow as one big school, Including the ngrl-. cultural department and It shot ahead of other universities for a time. Now, other states aro catching up. Thoy aro appropriating enough money amply to caro for both their "farms" and their stato universities. Now tho latter are rapidly coming to rival Nebraska's, and in some respects to outclass it. It Is time, high time, something bo done. It Is simply up to every student and every alumnus to get. busy. The Tree Dance at Vassar. Among the yearly customs at Vas sar is what is called "tho tree dance" by the Sophomore class. Tho tree in question is in the athletic circle sur rounded by tall pines with hearts at intervals between the trees. Then the Sophomores gather for the cere monies, the Seniors acting as guards to keep the other classes at a re spectful distance. This year the quaint little dance was especially charming. There was a full moon, and the girls who gavo the dance were dresed as fairies In flow ing draperies with iridescent wings and gowns. Each girls carried" an electric lantern--u. little tube that flashes light on and off with tho press ing of a button. This they manipulat- v . oo6ooooooooooooooooooooo a .-..
