' GREAT LECTURE.
( Continued from pago 1.)
tatlon, to try his Ideas and see If they
arc sound and reasonable.
Dr. Kent placed the six words on
the board, "attention," "observation,"
"concentration," "Invention," "con
struction," "experimentation," In tho
form of an arithmetic, drew a lino un
der them and placed for the sum of
all the word "satisfaction." Ho praised
the Japanese methods of instruction
and teaching and said that they were
the concentrated essence of tho best
In the world. The Japs have investi
gated the Bchool systom of tho world
and the system Worked out by them
his, therefore, based on the best points
picked out from all these investiga
tions. He thought the professions pretty
well taken care of by tho schools and
colleges, but that the clerks, mechan
ics, and tho like, should haye a sys
tom of education for them, one which
would fit their needs. Ho praised the
trade school, and thought It should be
fostered and encouraged. Tho half
time apprentice system was also a
good thing, according to tho lecturer.
By this means, apprentices were en
abled to work half time in the shop
and the other half could be spent in
school. Ho thought the increased in
telligence brought about by this sys
tem more than repaid the employer for
the outlay. He felt that every cent
spent by a community or state was
amply repaid Into the public 'treasury
In tho form of bettor citizenship and
intelligence.
