The dlscusBlon was dropped with the state ment that probably not onough at tention was paid to It among students nnd with tho suggestion that there were reasons, no doubt, for this lack of Interest. There are two reasons comparatively pluln. One of these is the attitude of cer tain Instructors toward the matter. A university is a place for tho development of now think ing, thlnklngthat' can break away from dogma and convention and look at things on a broad scale, look at the world and mass and ultimate things unhampered by fixed notions. Tho ob jection raised Is simply this: some professors have a tendency to Intro duce higher intellectual notions with out giving something also that will stimulate to higher living. It is what a man lives out, what- ho Is, not what ho believes, that counts. If tho teach er can communicate only tho broader Intellectual belief, ho is in danger of sweeping away tho studont's spiritual living Interwoven with his old beliefs. Let him show how the now belief may lead to, broader living. "Which is the better, a good man with, narrow views or an Intellectually broad man with immoral character? Both these com binations are not uncommon, but most people would prefer to live as neigh bor to (he former, Perhaps these teachings result most most commonly in nothing more seri ous than Indifference, but then the stu dent is missing a privilege of attaining a now sense of life and Its "meaning which ought to be the best and great est thing In a university course. A graduate ought to go out feeling the capacity now to live more broadly, not Bimply to think more broadly than when hd entered his course. The other reason for lack of the so called religious spirit Is the tendency of the student himself to cut loose from restraint and old customs to which he has been Used. This side of the matter deserves plenty of 'atten tion also, but the conclusion to be reached here after all, Is similar to the one cited above. "Rrat" Baseball Standings. EaBt Side. Played. Won.
