Entered at tho poBtofllco at Lincoln,
Nebraska, as Bccond-clasa mall matter
tinder tho Act of CongrcBS of March 3,
1870.
Yesterday the amounts added to the
famine relief fund raised the total to
$59.50. The ten and a half dollars re
ceived yesterday came from the follow
ing sources; 'P. B. Sears, $1; Minnio
Elliot, $1; Paul Dell, $1; Louise East
man, $1; Flossie Erford, $1; Cash,
$2; Lilian Hrubosky, $1; Eva Arnold,
$1; Mission Study Class, $.50.
If the students were once thoroly
aroused the fund would undoubtedly
take a Hoar Into the air that would bo
something worth remembering. It will
bo noticed that the totul amount from
theclty and state has approached the
one-thousand dollar mark. The cam
paign id just starting, nevertheless.
It's time to fall into line.
ALTERCATIONS.
Class altercations aro becoming of
lato Bomowhat common. It Is feared
that tho llttlo onos getting tholr first
peop at University lifo will get a bad
impression; thoy will come to think it
is a vory rude place and that they, in
order to maintain their position In it,
must struggle In no delicate mannor.
Freshmen Bhould not got this impres
sion. It 1b bad for them, bad for the
rost of tho school. It is very annoying
to have hoots and shouts of a lot of
brawling innocents under the sway of
mob-insanity breaking in upon tho Btu
dloiiB endeavors of upper classmen,
you know. Tho effect Is vory degrad
ing. Thoro is just one way for these first
year people to avoid causing this de-

follows:

terlatlon in the school and that is for
thorn to leave their hats at home. It
was all right, of course, for them to got
hats, and tholr tasto in choosing the
color thoy did is all together commend
able; it glvos tho proper fresh, just-from-naturo
aspect to them, but they
should know bettor than to wear such
a color. Sophomores are too close to
tho Btago of verdancy yet, themselves
not to bo Infuriated at tho sight of It,
much as a turkoy is at tho sight of rod.
Tho reaction is largely physlcologlcal,
no doubt. A blind impulse seizes upon
tho sophomorlc brain thru the stimulus
of the optic nerves. What is tho con
clusion? Froshmen had bettor woar
citizens' clothes.
Of course educators tell us children
must have oxcerclse and that they aro
not altogether to blame for all their
romping and playing when they should
-bo Btudylng. That may bo true, yet
when proporty is .destroyed in tho
romp tho little one is going too far.
When University men break windows
and proceed In a spirit of rowdyism to
"do things," they aro acting in a man
ner well becoming the name by which
the groat and immortal bard character
ized "theBe mortals."
