Are They Deteriorating In Efficiency and Breadth? In the Beilago zur Allogomolnon Zolturg for January 9, Dr. Rein of Jena reviews a recent book, '"'Deutsche Unrvorsltot und doutscho Zuhurft," by Proderlch v. d. Loyor, in which tho author tnkes a thoroughly pessimistic yiow of Gorman universities. Ono mtiBt not bo deceived, ho says, by tho rapid growth In natural sclenco and medicine, nor by tho increasing num ber of studonts. Since 1850 tho uni versities havo been going steadily to their place. They are tdday only the highest technical schools for special ists and training institutes for govern ment officials. V. d. Loyor also sharply crlticlzos tho profession. Independent personal ities, ho says, are rare among them, but of virtuosos, clever poseurs, un scrupulous .ofllco seekors and bureau crats there Is no lack. Their lectures are no longer Influential In tho build ing of character, but rather bring about bewilderment, dllettantolsm and P8ends knowledge. The physicians on tho faculty regard their own practice as more important than their duties as Instructors, and have, 'indeed, con descended to university work only in order to better their social condition and bo ablo to demand higher 'fees from their patients. This criticism of Gorman universi ties is especially Interesting because of several recent articles criticizing our American universities. It Is note worthy that these critics havo two points In common: (1) Over special ization; (2) The failure of instructors to exert an Inspiring influonco toward character formation. Math. 8emlnar.
