Professor Hlnman spoke on "Science and Idealism" at Convocation yestor day and told of tho thought move ments of tho present as results of tho past and the characterizing influential forces of the nineteenth century. There are two potent forces which mould .lifo, he said; the first one is natural science. To this is duo much beneficence, for it has increased crea tive power in man, shielded homcB from disease and death and, aside from this utilitarian standpoint, has opened a wondor world of romanco and truth. Tho free quest of truth has a relish pf Its own which rewards the devotee. During tho last fifty years science has gone farther than In all tho mil leniums which preceded it. Every science is now organized; it analyzes and treats every question. The stand ard of excellence has advanced as is Bhown by the remarkable growth of universities. Every alert man wants to come undor tho eye of expert science. This chango was swift and apparent, and the sceptro passed from tho church to tho university. Tho bal ance has been upset in tho world of intellectual culture, but in time tho masses will judge as tho leaders Judge. Tho second great influence was tho rich development of idealism, largely the work of German metaphysicians. These masters were largely unknown, but their works live and are known. In all lists of tho ten most influential books of the last one hundred years, is Drawin's book on Species, and in one-half of tho lists Haegol's Logic is to be found. Political freedom and many religious ideas drew their in spiration from idealism. The realism of the modern writer Is tho Bpirlt of genuine idealism. The central thought of philosophic idealism Is that the world is a unity. Light and darkness differ, also heat and cold, but they are only relative, not final. Many wrongly suppose that matter Is a static and Inert mass not to bo compared with tho riches of tho mind. Wo are, not drawing down spiritual things to a common level when wo say God Is tho genuine truth of all matter. Tho world Is unity and God its essence, but It does not stop there, for agpostlcs got that far. Tho something more which is recognized is the presence in human lifo of a fac tor not resulting from natural environ ment, but from tho depths of our being and from all being. Life Is more than a natural phenomenon. No single influence exists in science except tho Ideal of truth. Knowledgo arises from experience and as all truths are relative to absolute truth, so all moral values are relative to good. Science accounts for every de tail, Is mechanical thru and thru, with no thought for culture, but philosophy while the unity of the sciences in quires into validity and truth. - BBBBBJ jv2jI v!
