Simplified Spelling Board Plans Active
Campaign for This Year.
With an army of 15,000 supporters
who have signified thoir belief in the
simplified spelling idea, with 100 mug
azines and newspapers already using
tho shorter forms, and with 130 other
publications ready to begin to spell in
tho spaco saving way, tho Simplified
Spelling Board is planning for this
year a vory active campaign to secure
tho adoption of its idea. In tho first
two months of this year 360 Important
buslnoss men havo Joined tho move
ment. A campaign among college and
unlvorsity professors in two months
has addod GOO names to this class of
supporters. As a result, simplified
spoiling is now indorsod by 2,500 odu
oators in the Institutions of higher ed
ucation in this country. Tho next
campaign will bo to IntoroBt tho fac
ulties and pupils of the groat normal
schools. Already there are 3,000
teachers who havo signed tho ad
hesion card, while simplified spelling
is being taught or authorized in the
stato normal schools of Colorado, Il
linois, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania,
Wisconsin, and other states, and in tho
public schools of Washington, D. C;
Dayton, O.; Columbus, O.; Duluth,
Minn.; Passaic, N. J.; and many
cities and towns.
A simplified spelling convention will
bo hold in April in New York City, at
which plans for a sustained and ac
tive campaign will probably be for
mulated. Tho simplified spelling idea
continues to . make friends, and its
supporters are moro sangulno than
ever of its ultimate success.

Cuts Arriving.
Tho pictorial portion of tho Corn
husker is now beginning to assume
shape. Yesterday tho first big batch
of cuts arrived, these being of tho
groups of individuals. About fifty
groups woro sent this time and tha
this comprises but about one-fifth of
tho individual pictures, all tho remain
der are expected to arrive by tho
twelfth of tho month. Tho cuts so
far received show up with remarkable
clearness and this fact taken with
the now mothod'of arrangement bids
fair to make this feature of tho book
decidedly conspiclous. Tho work is
bolng dono by Baker Brothers of
Omaha.
Nearly all organizations havo now
had pictures. Yesterday, tho Univer
sity girls' basket-ball team, and some
of tho girls' class teams did the posing
act. It is expected the gymnastic team
will do tho act today.
Quito a number of students are
talking of making tho tour of Europe
wiht Dr. Lees' party which loaves
Lincoln about the eighteenth of Juno.
Professor Wells of Wosloyan and
Professor Perslngor of tho University
will offer courses in American History
in tho Summer SesBlon.
Superintendent J. L. McBrlon will
give a lecture to the teachers at tho
Summer Session on the subject, "The
Now School Laws." . r
W. C. Green, '01, has been reelected
as superintendent of schools at Tlldon
for tho coming year at an increase of
salary.
Professor G. H. Morse will give a
lecture at the State Farm Saturday, on
"Farm Mechanics."
High School Inspector Reed left for
a short trip over' the state yesterday.
