The students in the shops are build
ing about twenty-five speed lathes.
The entire work, Including making tho
patterns, casting them and working
them up Into tho finished article, Is
.being done by the, students in the
regular routine of their class work.
The lathes In thoniBelvos aro tho de
sign of Professor Richards and have
several features not possessed by the
ordinary lathes bought in the market.
It has been estimated that the entire
cost of the lathes under this plan will
not exceed ten dollars apiece, which
Is a saving of qulto n sum to tho de
partment, as tho regular market prlco
Is In the neighborhood of sixty dollars.
It is the intention of the department
to use the machines in the proposed
now engineering building, and when
completed,- together with what they
have already on hand In tho present
shops, will give a total equipment of
at least fifty lathes.
It Is also Intended tp work up sev
eral other pieces of apparatus, which
will be useful in tho same building
and will save the state a large surti of
money. Last year tho students in-tho
samo department did the machine
work nnd tho entire construction of a
shaper, which is now being used dally
In the shop. In this case the patterns
were shipped to tho University and'the
students worked them up into the
finished article. About $100.00 was
saved to tho department by this move.
The students in the wood shop will
soon be put to tho work of making.
