Of course, It is vain attempting to please everybody, but if the seriouB side of tho question discussed ' yeuter day is desired, nothing would give us nioro pleasure than to spek of it. It is, indeed, a serious subject, and tho more serious slnco a habit stand ing in a way, as an index to certain tendencies of our moUern life. Did it over strlko you that tho people of to day aro rather prone to overlook small things? to aim at some vague abstract aftor his first sthokoj but ho goes on. Tho physical harm done, however, is not tho most important, of course. Anything which violates bur physical lifo somehow dotracts from our spirit ual lifo too, especially when a pander ing to appetite, a surrender to some thing not higher. To tho Editor of Tho Nebraskan: Tho last year of University society has been exceptionally spectacular for its infinite number of new secret or ganizations. No period of pur Univer sity's history has been so celebrated for Its multitude of new student or ders. In fact, theso upstarts are so general that some have philosophically suggested that we aro passing thru an epoch of "Wild Cat" societies. Tho latest born of these mushroom organizations is tho "Wooden Sphinx." To such a degree of obscurity has this fanaticism of chartering new orders crazed people that tho records of an tiquity lack sufficient wlerd titles to christen them all. No sane person will criticise a lim ited number of sensible organizations organizations which have a definite, Instlng, vital purpose. A few compre hensive, stable societies among tho students aro Imperative. They organize, crystallzo and ce ment the diversified, interests of the University. ' But to overdo this, as It has been done recently, is farcial and disintegrating. . It Is gonorally acknowledged by the moro conservative element that such ephemoral institutions aro clogs In stead of motors of progress, and their burlesquoness is tho sport of sober minds. It will not kill you, unless you smoke too much, the evil effects are scarcely noticed as you go along and from tho process you gain considerable physi cal enjoyment. So, It Is simply a mat tor of exchange,. A man gives up a small part of his better spiritual and Intellectual llfe for the sake' of, a few moments physical gratification. He knows nicotine hurts him, tho he may not feel It now; It was told hlra at his mother's knee; It was proved to him In the' class room; Jt was, dem onstrated to him about half an hour vlduals to plunge Info an agreement which Is as undellberately broken as It Is made is a more gravo offence against society than the immortalized "Sin of Ingratitude." ' A SENIOR. Thoedltors are much aggrieved to think anyone's apprehensions should bo stirred over tho birth of the "Wooden Sphinx." Allow us to de claro at once that the "Wooden Sphinx" Is, and has over been, merely a creation of imagination.
