Speaks Entertainingly Before Union
Literary Society.
"Ov reading has almost become a
lost art," said Chancel lor 13, BonJ. An
drews In Ills short discourse boforo the
Union Society last Friday night. "The
reason for thiB," ho continued, "Is that
we read too much. Formerly when
books wore rare there was a groat de
mand for oral readers, who developed
the art of reciting into a high state of
perfection. But as books became
cheaper oral reading began to rotrd-
grade until wo havo the present state
of affairs. However, one imiBt read
aloud in orderyto get a good impres
sion of literature, and this is especial
ly true of poetry.
"Few people now use their voice
correctly. They do not exercise their
lungs enough, and in consequonco can
not speak long. If everybody would
take breathing exercises and use the
lower part of their lungs as well as the
upper I am sure there would bo less
consumption.
"Another thing a young person
should do is to store up in memory
gems of poetry. What a source of sat
isfaction it is to repeat these, espe
cially when one is traveling or when
old age with blindness and deafnoss
overtakes one!"
And to show the practicability of all
this, the Chancellor concluded. by re
citing "Lord Vellian's Daughter."
For Engineers.
Mr. N. A. Kemmish, M. E. '07, of
the Lincoln Traction Company, will
speak to tho Engineering Society on
Wednesday evening or this week at
oight o'clock in M 211. His subject
will be "District Heating" and should
prove of great interest to all interested
in engineering subjects. Since Ills
graduation from tho University, Mr.
Kemmish has been engaged with the
Lincoln Traction Company and is
thoroughly familiar with the plant
which was Installed in Lincoln a few
years ago, "by which the exhaust heal
from the power houses is piped thru
the business section and is used for
heating purposes by several of the busi
ness houses in tho city. He has a num
ber of blue prints and drawings which
Illustrate his subject clearly and this
should make his lecture more than 'a
drawing card to the engineers. Tho
