CONGRATULATIONS.
Tho basket-ball team njul tho ath
lotlc management are to be congratu
lated. When the visiting team last
Saturday night absolutely refused to
change their stylo of play to lit our
rulos, and furthermore, refused evon
to compromise, it was the proper thing
to yield to them. Their conduct hurt
them a groat deal more than it hurt
us; it simply gave us an opportunity
to show ourselves big enough to give
up a point and yet play a winning
game. True sportsmen do not quibble
over small polntB. Let tho. good work
go on.

Tho editor 'suddenly became very
pale, pressed his hand against his
brow, and said things.
"What is the matter, anyway?" ho
asked feebly.
"Umph," replied tho assistant editor
contemptuously, "haven't you yet
learned tho smell of a gar of ono of
those wagons that sneak up the back
alley?"
Tho other made his way to tho win
dow and looked out, then turned round
again with a sickly, foolish smile.
It's this way, you see. There Is a
small hole dug into a block of wood
and with this holo Is connected a tube.
The hole in the block is stuffed full of
chopped weeds and this lighted. Now
the man puts tho end of the tube In
betweon his jaws and sucks hard. The
smoke comes up into his mouth, nat
urally. What does ho do with' It now?
Ho can't chow It, it will not stay down
if he swallows it, feo he doefc the common-sense
thing, of course, and blows
it out again. How simple.. Then he
removes tho tube from 'betweon his
tectl), tn)ks fluently, looks up at tho
sky, sighs, spits, and takes another
pull, nevef forgetting to blow out
again, understand. What is the point
in the gamo, you usk? Well, really,
the sparrows are very thick this morn
ing.. Of late, the stylo seems to dictate
that every man's frontal-pendent, fume
generator be just as ponderous an im
plement us ho is capable of supporting
by the brute forco of his two Jaw
bones. Surely, gentlemen, you are
unmindful of tho future. When In tho
ages to come, some good geologically
inclined civilian shall dig up your skull
and, marking the massive lower max
illary there developed, declare he has
at last found the "missing link," not
only will it cause you considerable
liumlllolion over in Hades, but because
of the comparatively recent stratum In
which the relic was found, it will in
vito a challenge from another wise
one of geoloy, and an alteration ensu
ing, somo one may get his feellqgs
hurt.. Behold, what a tradgey you
may avert..
Let us plead that you emulate in this
respect some of our worthy professors
whose breath always reminds ono of
ten-centers. Aud, by the way, did you
notice one of our most agust and dig
nified deans and our jovial professor
from the psychology department last
Saturday noon promenading along the
front stone walk, each With a tail of
blue smoke floating out behind? It Is
hoped no one will fail thru lack of rec
ognition to get the directness of this
edifying and inspiring example. That
would he an Irreparable loss. But If
you cannot accept this, being -quite
enamored of that big, cumbersome,
soot-plugged, solled-sardlne-llke-smell-ing
hole-In-a-block, for the good love of
humanity, clean it out once In three or
four years anyway.
