Tho following news Horn, taken from a Winconsln educational Journal, seems ho much In keeping with condi tloim turnout many of tho other iMlBHlsHlppI Valley states that It la re published In full:. "The report of tho legislative com mittee upon the affairs of the Univer sity, made public last month, is a con servative, document touching many ad ministrative and professional' details of the' work of the Institution. "There Is no doubt but that the thbroness of the Investigation made by this committee brought discourage ment to some individual members of la faculty -men who have given their jongth and intellectual powers far more than tho state could reasonably demand of them. Whllo this one fea- turo is to bo regretted, it is only an incident and was necessary on the part of the men directed to investi gate the Institution by tho law-making body of the commonwealth. We be lieve that tho few thus 'offended will In time coincide with the. general .be lief of the people of the state that the Investigation, pn the whole, was a fair and importial one and must re sult in reforms which will bring the University ''into closer touch with the p'eoplo upon whom it Is directly de spondent. , "Without going into details one gen '. oral result for good seems to have been accomplished, and that is the arousing of the conBCioncos of the powers who control the institution to the fact that the University of Wisconsin-was created for tho peo'plo, and must ever be maintained and con Adams-Farquar-O'Neal Company Formerly Paine ZINCQLN NEB V2,7 O STREET ducted in their interests. Unlike Chi cago, Yale, Harvard, Leland Stanford and other colleges endowed by private Individuals, the Madison institution is dependent upon tho tax-payers of tho state for its support,, and this funda mental fact must never be loBt sight of in the administration of its affairs. "That the University conscience has thus been aroused is evidenced by many reforms already instituted. "Football has been cleansed, the "Worn" 1ms been deprived of Its ex pensive features, fratornltles, are to be regulated, correspondence courses aro being established and we prophesy for the future a peoples' University, at Madison, whlch.lt will never again1 be necessary for the legis lature to Investigate."
