THE "BIG FIVE."
NobraBka's Athletic Board is con
fronted with a problom of no small di
mensions. It has up for decision a
question of athletic polloy which may
vitally, affect athletics at our institu
tion for many years to come and possi
bly for all time. This problom may be
stated concisely as follows: Should
Nebraska Join tho proposed Missouri
Valley Conforono League?
In attempting to obtain a satisfac
tory solution of tho matter in hand
there are several factors in tho situa
tion to bo carefully noted. One of
those and possibly the most impor
tant 1b tho relations which now exist
between Nebraska rnnd tho so-called
"Big- Nino,"and tho effect that Nobras-

For many years Nebraska has hud
its representatives at the Thanksgiv
ing meeting of tho "Big Nine" mana-
gersand officers, and has presented Ifct
petition for membership in tho Confor
ence. For just as mauy years has our
"petition been denied upon tho grounds
of our dlstanc9 from tho center
of the athletic combination and of tho
present conference membership which
Is oven now unwleldly. In our estima
tion theso are obstacles which can.
never be romoved and it is our belief
that tho only relations Nebraska can'
over hope to maintain with, the' mem
bers of the "Big Nino" are those of
the chance games which our schedules
of tho past three or four years have
demonstrated, we can arrange with tho
very best of them.
What effect,' then, will our member
ship In tho proposed League havo up
on our chances tor secure the games
with tho big teams of the prese'nt Com
feronco which are necessary for ttio
malntononce of our football prestige?
Wo thoroly bolievo that if there is any
appreciable offect it will not bo harm
ful. Tho only possible trouble that
could como would bo due to different
rules in tho two organizations and
with Iowa and Nebraska members of
one conference and interested in tho
other, wo havo no fear of this contin
gency. The next phase of tho problom is
tho question of the benefits that mem
bership in tho proposed conference
would confor upon Nebraska over and
above the ones Bhe now enjoys, in
discussing this particular question wo
shall tako it for granted that tho motn
borship of tho "Big Plvo" would consist
of the institutions already in lino; that
is tb say, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri,
Washington, and Nebraska. Wo under
stand that the .membership of Iowa
IS decldely in doubt and in our opinion
if sha does not Join, it is plainly evi
dent that the Conforence Is not worth
while to Nebraska; but if Bhe does not
join matters tako on a somewhat dif
ferent color.
An alliance with the leading institu
tions of our section would benefit Ne
braska in tho assurance it woufd glvo
us of afull and satisfactory schedule
of contests in ovory branch of our ath
letic endeavor every year. It would
penoflt Nebraska hy making her "a
big toad in a small puddle" rather
than "a tadpole on the outskirts of a
lake" It would benefit Nebraska by
establishing relations of other than a
chance athletic nature with tho most
influoncial institutions of higher edu
cation In tho middle west, and such
relations as we havo now only in some
degree with Kansas. It would benefit
Nebraska by making her a leader in
tho spread of clean athletics thru tho
west rather than an Imitator of Beml
castcrn standards and ideals.
In our humble estimation, Nebraska
should join tho "Big FIvq" at tho

earliest possiblo moment. Further
more she should do everything in her
power to sway Iowa from her doubtful
attitude toward tho now conference.
The first steps of an excellent move
ment have been taken and they should
bo followed up at once.
Tho Nobraskan is in receipt of a
copy of a monograph fresh from tho
press of the University of Chicago and
bearing tho name of Dr. James T.
LeeB, of our own instltuUon. Tho arti
cle is a reprint of a contribution to
the Classical Journal and is on the fol
lowing subject: "A Photographic
Archaeological Expedition to Sicily
and Greece." The expedition was car
ried thru, In 1903 at the Instigation of
the University and was highly success
ful. .
