A PR0FE8S0R'S OPINION,
What An Englnerlhgl I nstructor Thinks

neor ought to be thoroly trninod Jn ;
letter writing. Last year, Mr. Davis, :
one of tho engineering instructors, and '
withali a very well bred and polished f
gentleman, asked' tho sevoral mem
bers of his chiHsos to write-him a let
ter applying for a ppdtlonr It was
remarkable that put of fifty or sixty
letters only a very few wore really

sition, poor, spelling and poor punctu
ation, the form was. bad, tho letter was
Improperly foldod, and -tho addresses '
on tho envelopes would not suit post-J
master Sizor,
"Possibly a Junior themo is not the
place for this sort of composition, brit:
It ought to bo taught somewhere; ,-if
not in tho university rhetoric classes,
then it falls back upon the ovorbur
dened high school. Then, again, every J
practising engineer must make out re-1
ports, draw up specifications, and j
write up scientihe investigations. Jni,
tho nudreB of Mr. Waddell, a noted en
gineer, before -tho Engineering So
ciety a few years ago, ho laid espoclal
stress upon the use of good English,
both in speaking nnd writing, as the
very best passport of the engineer to
preferment.''
SWEATER8 FOR BOTH.
Championship Money Divided Equally
Between Freshmen and Senloro.
Tho members of the Sonlqr and
Freshmontootball teams met yester
day morning to -decide what should bo
done with tho gate receipts from tho
series of intorclass games. It was do-'
elded that tho money, which amount
ed to about $100, should be equally
divided between the two teams and
that both should get sweaters. It was
also voted to allow tho members ot
both teams who had played at least
one-half in the championship games
to wear the numerals of their respect-
i ive classes on their sweaters.
Tho FreBhmen have decided to get
vest swoators somowhnt similar in
style to thoso of tho 'Varsity, It Js
probablo that the Seniors will got
something similar but tho matter will'
be definitely decided by vote- of tho
men concerned. '
To Study Lumber Industry.
Messrs, C.'G. Bates, R. G. Piercpani
G. B. McDonald, 'Students in the d
partment of Forestry, are planning a
careful study of the lumber industry In
Minnesota during tho Christmas holi
days.' They will leave Lincoln on
Thursday And will go to Cl.oquot, Min
nesota, where they will be tho guests
of tho Northern Lumber Co.
According to th6 student ,way. of
looking at it, pupils of tho School of
Music are less fortunate than those
of- the 'rest otjho University, in that
vacation for them begins on Decern-
ber'24' and ends on January 2.
