E. O. Secke Talks on United 8tates
8ervlce.
At a special mooting of tho ForoB
Club Friday afternoon a good num
ber of studentB Interested In forestry
profited by tho talk given by Mr. E.
O. Slecke, a graduate of tho Univer
sity of Nebraska and now a member of
tho U. S. Forest Service.
Mr. Slecke has been engaged since
July In a survoy of tho Truckeo-Car-son
Irrigation project of western. Ne
vada. The work of tho Forest Ser
vice In co-operation with tho Reclama
tion Sorvlco, Is to advise the settlers
of this region as to tho planting or
trees, tho caro of their woodlots and
wind-breaks, and the probable result
of tholr efforts. Tho field Is an un
usually fertile one, as many thousand
acres of irrlgablo land aro suited only
to tree-planting. Tho country Is,
moreover, almost devoid of timber for
fuel and fenco posts, and coal Is very
expensive. Tho planting of wind
breaks to prevent the blowing of sands
is also strongly advised. For this work
j cottonwood and black locust are tho
trees recommended.
Tho Inhabitants of tho region are
very much lnsympathy with forestry
work, and thelrrlgatlon engineers to
a man realize that tho.success of their
projects depend on thdprotectlon of
tho watersheds by afforestation. Tho
watershed concerned in tho Truckee
Carson project Is that which supplies
Lake Tahoo, Avhoro the Truckeo rlvor
takes Its origin. Mr. Slecke's later
work has been to Investigate this
water shed, t6 locate ranger's nurser
ies for tho experimental growing of
young trees, and to Instruct and advise
tho rangor '"-.Uila, work. In some
