Mr. Mills of the School of Music Com ments on Recital. The song recital by Madame Louise Homer-, Friday ovening, at tho Audi- j.torium, was aslgnal success, both for ine singer herself ana ror tne Matinee Musical, under whose auspices she ap peared. Madame Homer has a true contralto voice of wide compass, with-which she has 'acquired great facility. She sang the entire program with artistic Judgment and effectiveness, leading tho audience thru the laby rinth of light and shade, tone coloring and blending, such a? is possible only with those who have their voice mech anism under complete control. From a vocalist's standpoint, her tbno was surprisingly throaty during Ihe earlier part of tho -program, this j being most noticeable in soto voci passages, but' she showed' a marked gain In this respect as tho evening ad vanced. Mrs. Will Owen Jones played all tho accompaniments (with the oxception of those by Mr. Homer) upon prac tically six hours' notice. Mrs. Jones performed the task in a musiclanly and sympathetic manner, for which we wish to extend to nor the highest com mondation. Why persons, who are dependent upon the -accompanist as singers, do not exercise sufficient fore thought to see that proper arrange- J ments are made in adequate timo is inexplicable. An Interesting feature of the pro gram was a group of songs by Sidney Homer, with tho composer at tho piano. These songs are fresh, melodi ous and niade a pleasing effect on their first hearing.
