Within tho Inst few dnys there have appeared sovernl indications thutthero is n Inck of corporation botween cor- aln mombors of tho UnivorHlty faculty that Ib not only an inconvenionco to tho studoilts of tho institution, but a decided clieck to tho wolfare of tlio University as well. Tho spirit that underlies tho slight friction that has been caused is ap parently tho unwilllngnosB of one de- partment or instructor to give way to another, regOTdlOBB of how valid tho demand may be. One Instructor, it acorns, Intends to give a niid-somestor examination on a certain day this week and it has. developed that one of hor students Is expectod by another In structor to go on a class excursion which will tako tho entire day as- ocxcxxooxcxxxxcooooocoooo 8 D E? Wood COOOOOOOC)CCOOOOOOGOCOOOOO signed for tho examination. When this Btudont applied for permission to j take a special examination and gavo'i tho reasons for the roquest, tho in-1 structor replied that no excuse would bo allowed and ' Uiat tho only condi tion upon which the special examina-j tion could bo granted would be the , payment of thd feo demanded by the : regulations of tho University for such , a favor, It so happens that TJoth the examination and the excursion are important in their respective courses and tho unfortunate student is assur edly on the horns of a dilemma. Another indication along the samo lino was the refusal of ono department to excuse tho first year students en rolled for laboratory work in its courses last Saturday when a mid semester examination affecting every Froshnian In the University was given by another department. In the latter case, too, excuses were granted to such -students as went to Omnha on the' footb'all excursion. This -is a state of affairs that Is cer- tainly to be doplored. Petty selfish ness or a personal grudge enn be the only reason for so small an action on the part of a member of the faculty. To tako advantage of one's official po sition or the technicality of a Univer sity regulation to carry out personal spite or to avoid a bit of extra work, when the cause is legitimate appeals tctiB as conduct unworthy of any Uni versity Instructor and decidedly detri mental to the cause of higher educa tion. We bolldve that every Instructor in the University, regardless of his rank or hiB lack of rank, should work in harmony with every other instructor. We arc all bound togethor In ono Uni versity and wo all have, or should have , pne general aim: tho hotter ing of our institution and the exten sion of its Influence. Plulnly, dissen sion, or even a mere lack of harmony, among tho faculty, will in no way aid tho cause. WE WANT THAT CUP. Cross-country tryouts will be held At 4:30 sharp this afternoon.
