A largo crowd gathered In tho court room of tho College of Law when Justice of Peace Venrick tried the case of the State var-David Slmms and Leo S. Legro. In this case the defend ants were charged with obtaining mohey under false pretenses. It will bo roiriembored that those are the partleswho sometime ago played the old trick of serving summons on sev eral Freshmen and collecting ten cent feeB from each. StanleyNSartos was prosecuting attorney. S. M.Thomp son, who was attorney for tho defend ants, demanded separate trial, so thV case against David Slmms was first tried. The defendant admitted getting the money, but rested his case on the proposition that tho state muBt prove his Intention to defraud, which he held the state had failed to do. Justice Venrick however, was of different opinion and rendered judgment against the defendant, fining him $50 and tho ten centB obtained from complaining witness, LouIb Gregory. The defend ants will appeal their care to the dis trict court. The case against Legro was not tried because of lateness of hour. Tiro cour);, however, sot It to como oft on November 9.
