Tho University Republican Club
held an enthusiastic rally in Memorial
Hall Saturday for tho purpose of
arousing Interest among the Btndents
for tho coming eloqtion and for tho
annual election "of officers. Th.e open
ing speech was made by Mr. McKeB
sen, candldato for state senator from
Lancaster County. Robort Cqwell, of
Omaha, candldato for railroad com
mlsloner, followed with the principal
address of the evening. Dr. WlnnotU
candidate for railroad commissioner,
nnd Ned Brown, candidate fpr state
representative, also made short talkes.
Mr. McKesson nnd Mr. Brown aro
graduates of thta University. Each
expressed an appreciation of the op
portunity of mooting again with Uni
versity men, discussed tho benefit to
be dorlvod from work at tho Univer
sity of Nebraska, and pledgod them;
selves to work for tho interest of tho
University In tho legislature if they
were elected.
Mr. Cowell and Dr. WInnott dis
cussed the railroad situation In this
stato and the need of n railway com
mission. The freight rates from Hast
ings to Omaha as compared with the
rate from Omaha to largor eastern
cities was cited as an example of tho
unjust discrimination now In vogue.
The election of officers resulted In

Tho committee appointed at tho last
meeting to challenge the Joffersoniau
Democratic Club to a joint debate re
ported that the challenge had been
presented, but no reply had been re
ceived. Tho committee was author
ized to assume -full charge of the de
bate If the Democratic Club accepted
the challenge.
A movement was started to have a
regular Republican rooting squad. A
chief rotor was elected and plans aro
being pushed to try and secure effec
tive rooting on the occasion of all
meetings in which the Republicans aro
Interested.

First Chamber Concert.
The first of a curies of- concerts of
"chamber music" was rendered by tho
Steckelborg Quartet in Memorial Hall
last evening. An appreciative audience
heard the program, which was -except
tlonally well rendered. Anothor con
cert of lmiliar -nature will be an
nounced before long and a still larger
audience is expected. Tho concert
last night was the ftgst chamber mu
sic" ever given under tho OjUspipes,
tho University School of Music. .
.' Barbs Fail to plect.
Owing to the lack of a quorum at
the meeting called yesterday raornipg
the Associated Barbs failed to elect
officers for the coming year or to ac
complish any other business. Another
'meeting was at once set for next Tues
day, and it is hoped that more -interest
will be displayed than was evident,
yesterday.
