Several dnys ago tho Nobraskan pub lished In Us columns n semi-humorous bit of verso taking to task the crowds of smokors'who congregate daily, and usually at Convocation hour, outside of the south gatos of the campus. Ap parently this rather gentlo hint had no effect for, if anything, the ranks of these offenders against good taste have increased rather than dlmlnshed. A more decided expression of opinion seems to bo necessary and it is to be hoped that a further repetition may not bo called .for. Since smoking is prohibited upon the campuB It is. not at all unnatural that those men who aro addicted to the use of tobacco should go only so selves to pOHfllblc comment. In our estimation no loyal student with tho right motives for entering the University can afford to lower himself in the estimation of tho Uni versity public by committing such an act of discourtesy if It is nothing worse than that. We would suggest to men desiring to smoke at any time, that they select some other base of operations, and it they still wish to remain close to the campus let them confine themselves to the eastern end of the Armory or Bomo other equally unobtrusive spot outside the fence. ANOTHER PROTE8T. While wo aro "wielding the ham mor" it may not be amiss to call to tho attention of those who nttend Con vocation, a bit of discourtesy that re sults wholly from thoughtlessness and can bo readily corrected with a little care. Before the beginning of the regular exercises on each Monday and Friday Mrs. Raymond Is accustomed to play tho organ for about Ave minutes as a prelude. This is done while students are coming into tho room and the noise made in tho search or seats is, of course, unavoidable. Tho noise does not stop here, however, for tho Inter val beforo the gong strikes Is usually employed in a vigorous discussion of last night's danco or class politics. It strikes us that this is distinctly dis courteous to the organist as well as a decided loss to the Individual who misses the benefit of tho masterpieces of music that Mrs. Raymond renders. Along this lino Is tho visible and sometimes quite audible reading of the Nobraskan that goes on at the Bame time. Editorially, we acknowl edge that we like to feel that the stu dents are anxious to read tho Nebras kan, but wo do believe that it should bo done elsewhere than at Convoca tion. Strict attendance to tho exer cises will pay, wo feel sure, and It will make tho part of tho people who 1 ni7'r''rTiJ5rvi7'f7vTj7'Fv7? i a H ii ii ii H ii NEW - COLLEGE - HATS a a a a iU 2 1-2 inch ribbons. UNIVERSITY BULLETIN. a a a a far beyond tho boundary line as Is j ' necessory lo enjoy their smoke be 'tween hours. Wo do not pretend to be censors of tho habits of the stu dents of theA University and we havd no word of condemnation save as tq the method employed. But here we do find serlouB fault. In the first place the south gates aro used far moro generally than any oth ers opening upon tho campus. Es pecially is this true at Convocation hour when large numbers of young ladles are passing in and out. To block the gates in any way at such a time would bo a serious Incon venience but when In additlqn to this there is added a cloud of tobacco smoko that Is exceedingly offensive to most of our co-ed students there seems to be reason for vigorous com plaint on tho grounds of downright rudeness. There Is In addition to this positive cause' for protest the repug nance that tho co-eds havo for passing J a crpwd of idlers and subjecting thorn- favor ub so willingly much easier than fit is at present. 80PHS WIN CANE RUSH. Tho usual class rivalry between the Freshmen- and Sophomores has been prevalent this year in rather largo moasuro. FroriTtho first pasting of "procs" by both classes on Tuesday night there was considerable excite ment culminating Saturday afternoon In tho cane rush. The Sophs were able to broak seven out of tho ten canes held by the Freshmen and .were therefore declared tho victors. Belolt Round Table. Forest Club Meeting.
