On May 18 and 10 the Varsity vlll
cross bats with the ball tossors from
Kansas In what promises to he the
fastest pair of base ball games seen
on Nebraska field In many a day.
Some few years have elapsed since
the Jawhnwkers last twirled tho horse
hide on our. diamond which fact, In
addition to tho mild chastisement
given tho Cornhuskers during the
Easter recess, will undoubtedly stim
ulate their desire to gain greater victories.
Nebraska, on tho other hand, has
nor stimulants, too. She has just re
turned from a two-weokB' run against
Fate, and, feeling a trifle Irritated at
the treatment received at her hands,
deBlres to "have It out" with someone
Jayhawkers preferred. And then, too,
sho has a basket-ball defeat to settle

Under these circumstances the games

Whether or not this forcing of intor
colleglato athletics to the background
Is the best policy to pursue is a ques
tion which merits considerable atten
tion. That the Interests of a school
should bo sacrificed and they are un
doubtedly are being sacrificed In some
instances because one particular form
of athletics has been declared a nuis
ance, seems not only unwise but, from
tho point of view of tho student body
especially, unjust.
Alpha Tau Wins.
Alpha Tau Ompga defeated Kappa
Sigma yesterday in a very interesting
game, of ball. Both teams played hard
to win, but the A. T. O's. seemed to
bo a little better with the bat. Both
Belcher and Howard, tho twirlors,
pitched a good game, and Reynolds
catching and batting for Alpha Tau
was ono of tho features of the game.
Olen Mason In tho left garden was
responsiblo for a nice catch which re
tired tho team just in time. But
Spragues' catch of Johnson's fly was
all that kept Kappa SIg from opening
up for a few runs In the. last inning.
Tho fraternity schedules are fast
drawing to a close as but two games
remained to be played on the East
side, and seven on tho West. By the
26th all will bo played off, and ready
for the final championship games.
Barbs to Meet Tuesday.
A meeting of the Associated BarbB
has been called for Tuesday at chapel
time. At the last meeting of the barbs
It was voted to ask the commons to
consider and report on the system, of
charging a registration fee at the be
ginning of each semester for tho sup
port of athletics, such as Is now in
force in a number of colleges In the
country, A report from the Commons
on this proposition will be heard, dis
cussed and some action taken relative
to It.
It Is probable that the annual elec
tion of officers will also occur at that
time.

Nebraska Is a trifle to the good when
the finish comes. As the price of ad
mission, twenty-five cents, Is-sufficiently
low to p lit the game within the
reach of all, there can ho no valid ex
cuse for staying away.
- The reaction against athletics for
athletics' sake seems to ho of a perma
nent nature. At the time of Its set
ting In, last autumn, many wore of tho
opinion that the reform would prove
short lived; but time has proven that
such Is not the case. Everywhere
throughout the East high schools, acad
emles and universities are giving schol
astic endeavors preference over athletic
attempts. Yale, Harvard and Penn
sylvania are paying increased attention
to debating and other similar forms of
rivalry, while at Columbia, New York
University and a number of other in
stitutions athletics are being rapidly
superseded by like attractions.
Pan-Hellenic Poster.
Mr. P. J. Harrison, assistant regis
trar, has just put up a poster announc
ing the Pan-Hellenic dance. Mr. Har
rison's ability as a pen artist has long
been known, but tho one put up yes
terday surpasses any other work done
in the past. The design is something-
very original and well worked out.
The shading Iso fine In some places
that one can hardly believe that it is
done in any other way but in water
colors. All the colors worked In are
so harmoniously blended that tho post
er has a richness seldom excelled or
equalled by pen work.
