It is encouraging to see a noble
commonwealth like that of Wisconsin
como to the rescue of its university
whenever that Institution sees fit to
appeal to ltomld. No matter what
the amount asked-for might be, no
matter to wtisAejyilfMuest might
bo put, the SfaTTgTiflaCuro, through
the Board of Regents says Go ahead;
call on us!" ,
When the Badger faculty wants an
increa8oln salary It gets it When
the University thinks it needs a few
more thousand books, tho books come.
So it 'Is with buildings and with im
provements of all kinds. Tho people
of the State seem to glory in the
money they spend on their "little
school" at Madison. They seem to be
imbued with tho happy spirit that
" nothing is too good for their State
University. -"As
a result, the University of Wis
consin' Js in many respects tho great-'
et 'State university in this country.'
vHer library is ranked among the best
in tho, United States, as are her. gym
nasium and schools of engineering.
Whfto In her faculty are proportion
ately moro "great men" than in tho
faculty of any other institution in
America.
And now the Bpard of Regents como
forth nnd says: Go nhead, boys. Pick
tho best debating" team you can. Get
the best dobnter In Wisconsin to coach
it and tho best team In tho West to
meet It, and then when it is all' over
send Us the bills." Undor such condi
tions as these what can an Institution
expect but victory?
WI8CON8IN 8UB8IDIZE8 DEBATING
Badger Institution is Relieved of All
Financial Troubles by Regents,
Tho Board of Regents of tho Unlver-slty-of
Wisconsin has decided to sub
sidize debating at that institution'.
Heretofore, as at other universities,
the Badgers have been compelled to
meet debate expenses from debate re
ceipts or, when that source of rovenuo
was Insufficient, as was usually the
case, from tho pockets of the faculty,
debaters or whomsoever might como
to tho rescue. In the future, however,
they need but get the enemy there
and the Board of Regents .will do the
rest.
It Is said authority that that body
devoted one hundred and fifty dollars'
to tho Wisconsin debating board to do
fray tho expenses of tho Nebraska
Wisconsin debate; and that It told the
board, furthermore, that in case tho
sum was nol sufficient to meet all bills,
to call on It for moro.
A similar plan of carrying on de
bates Is being considered at .other uni
versities in the West. Minnesota has
long since como to the conclusion that
debates cannot bo made to" support
themselves, as have both Iowa and
Nebraska, and for that reason has be
gun to advocate tho subsidy system.,
Unless some such means of meeting
the financial difficulties attending a do
bate can bo hit Upon, say tho Gophers,
