Tho selection of General NelBon A.
Miles as Commencement orator is re
colvod with much gratification by the
Sonior class as woll as tho Unlvorslty
- at largo. That Chancellor Andrews
and tho commlttoo choso wlsoly is tho
sentiment of all. Tho chdico is strict
ly in hooping with tho selections of
previous yoars, and every one feolB
suro that Gonoral Miles will perform
hiB duty with honor to tho claBS that
has chosen him.
ThlB is the first time for several
years that a person of so great promi
nence In national affairs and military
circles has boon called upon to fill tho
Commencement day orator's chair.
Tho lot has gonorally fallen to some
member of either houso of congress
or a porson of literary fame. But it
is felt that tho chango will not be
detrimental to tho exorcises, for it is
known that Gonoral Miles oration
flll bo as literary as any that have
procotf$ n'm as Commencement ora
tor.
thoro been a greater chango in any
department of school work than thore
has been In tho military department
during the last six months. A depart
ment which was utterly shunned by
tho students tfion, is now looked upon
as ono of tho best In tho University.
To say that the policy has changed
would be putting it mildly. Antagon
ism between all other departments
and tho military was tho course of
events in '04-'05, but "what a change."
Now everything moves along diarmonl
ously, tho men enter into drill with a
zest and good will, for thoy know they
will bo treated right. There has be"en
no semi-weekly clashes with athletics,
and tho baseball men have not been
chased off the athletic field. But while
Captain Workizer ,1108 brought har
mony out of discord, yet ho has every
thing carried out in strict military
manner and no leniency has been
shown any man unlesB-absolutely necessary.
