Chanellor Andrews on Football.
At tho tenth annual meeting of the
National Association of State Univer
sities, hold at Washington, D. .C, last
week, Chancellor Andrews, president
of tho association, dollvored the an
nual address, in which ho discussed
the attltudo state universities should
take toward graduato Avork and Inci
dentally football.
Although tho association did not
como to a definite conclusion relative
to graduate schools In connection with
state universities the opinion as gen
erally oxpreBsed by the members was
that such universities are compelled,
by forco of circumstances, to maintain
courses in graduate work if tho states
are to retain their positions as con
trollers of public learning. Should
they refuse to furnlBh graduate in
struction, it was argued, such instruc
tion would then bo left entirely In the
hands of an "aristocracy of learning."
Following its discussion on this sub
ject, tho ussoclatlonf took up the ques
tion of athletics In bUio universities.
During his remarks upon this topic,
Chancellor Andrews said:
"I approve, under reasonable regu
lations, all the usual forms of college
sport truck athletics, tennis, base
ball, basket-ball, football and rowing.
Football does not deBorv.o tho conBuro
It Is now fushlonable to mole out to
It. Tho game Is sttefcuous, which Is
Its glory, for young men need train
ing In that quality; butk is not rough
in the sense morally assigned to that
word. Played under due oversight,
football breeds. ' not callousness, but
kindness and restraint. As schooling
in ulertne8s, courage, self-mastery,
motor ofllciency, exact discipline ,and
determination to achieve, it has no
equal short of the army or navy ser
vice. Nothing else In or about col
lege is In these points comparable.
Its advantages reach not few, but
many. Evils, of course attach to" the
sport, as to everything worth while.
These are to bo deplored and re
pressed, not exaggerated or paraded.
No fow o( these we ourselves create
by artificial und unreasonable regula
tions on eligibility;' "
That Chancellor Andrews voiced tho
opinion of the association taken as a
wholo is proven by the fact thuL it
tabled permanently the resolution of
W. T. Thompson, president of Ohio
Stato University, "deploring the bru
tality and waste of time" resulting
from the game. Upon ltB. adjournment,
President Roosevelt received the mem
bers of the association at the White
house.
The" first of the-lnterclass series of
football games for the class champion
ship of the University will occur
Thursday when the Juniors and
Seniors meet on tho gridiron to decide
who will moot tho victors in tho
Sophomore-PreshmaTTcontest. t prom
ises to be one of tho most Interesting
class games ever wWjtnessed bn tho
campus. In spite of tho fact that four
of tho men who played dn'these 'teams
last year are now on tho 'varsity squad
and are therefore ineligible, the teams
present a strong linq-up.
Combining tho law and academic
teams in football has . considerably
'trengthenod the teams. Several
"scrubs" will appear in tho Hne-up of
either team. They seem about evenly
matched in weight and football ex
perience. Tho Juniors will .hold a rally this
morning ln-'the Chemistry Lecture
room to stir up internal in tho game.
President DeYoiing.wlll In all proba
bility preside and speeches; will ho
mado by a number of prominent men
Jn the class.
