The Stato University Collogo or
Medicine begins its new year proudly.
Several features greatly broaden and
strengthen Its work. New laboratories
have been fitted up for Bacteriology,
Pathology, Histology, Embryology,
Physiology and Pharmacodynamics.
More than $2,600 In now apparatus
has been added to the equipment of
these laboratories, and this, with the
increase In the fnculty roll, gives the
work .n this field extraordinary
strength. Friends of the collego are
proud of the standing it has attnlned.
The New York State Examining Board,
tho most exacting of any state board
in tho tTnlon, has ranked our College
of Medicine, after careful lnvestlga
tlon, in the highest class, an honor
shared by very few schools west of
the Alleghany mountains. Students
are pointing with great pride to the
fact that a Sophomore student of last
year has been appointed undergrade
ate assistant at Johns Hopkins Med
ical School, which, with Harvard, Is
ranked by foreign authorities distinct
ly above all others In this country.
The course of Btudy Is enriched by
several changes, especially tho addi
tion of Introductory clinical work Into
tho Sophomoro year. In giving this
the University has been fortunato
enough to secure the assistance of o
number of highly trained Lincoln
physicians and also valuable cllnJcnl
opportunities here.
Tho clinical work of tho last two
years in Omaha has been still further
systematized. Tho sectional clinics
which were Introduced recently after
the German model and have proved
ho successful, will be more extensive.
No medical school west of tho Alle-
ghanleu has bo largo a faculty of
strong men or so abundant clinical
material In proportion to lta enroll
ment. Tho aim of tho Regents and
faculty Is to keep It In tho front rank
of medical schools, second to no part
of the entire University. Among
Western schools it has led in the in
troduction of higher requirements for
entrance to professional study, having
set tho standard of four full years of
high school work several years before
tho advance was made by tho Asso
ciation of American Medical Colleges.
This requirement has boon held to
Ilrmly without evasion, or spOolul
privileges to any student as hereto
fore announced, In view of the iiocob
slty of a broad basis for the compre
hension of tho problems underlying
modern scientific medicine, tho Unl
verBlty Intends at an early date to
raise the requirements for entrance to
tho Cjpllogo of Medicine so as lo In
clude one year of collego study above
tho high school course. Even now the
majority of students, many of thenr
at no llttlo personal sacrifice, are
availing themselves of tho advantages
of the six-year combined courso which
yields both general and professional
degrees and 1b regarded by educators
as tho best preparation for successful
work In tho practice of medicine.
