Engineering Notes.
Messrs. Walton and Hurlburt of the
electrical engineering department, are
working upon rotary and alternating
hysteresis for their graduating thesis.
V has been generally accepted that ro
tary and alternating hysteresis produce
the same losses in the Iron massed
subject to the magnetic flux, 1. e., there
Is no difference wihethor the altera
tions are in the magnetic lines produc
ed by the rotation of the comutator In a
dynamo, or whether the alternations
are In the current which produces the
magnetic lines, as in a transformer.
The object of this thesis is to prove
o: disprove this theory of trysteresis
They are determnled not to fall be
cause of mechanical Imperfections, and
huve constructed ball bearing appara
tus. A very Ingenious method of mea
suring the heat generated is by im
bedding a wire In the iron test piece
and calculating the rise in temperature
from Its 'hot resistance. '

electric blue printing apparatus. This
method will be so much quicker that
the sun exposure, will be independent
of the weather.
The Seniors of the Mechanical En
gineering Department were invited by
Prof. Richards to visit the new city
power plant of which himself and Prof.
Morse are consulting engineers. At
the time Prof. Richards was directing
the setting of the large concroto-maBs
and fastenings for the two heavy en
gines and generators.
