An effort was made to schedule a game with the University of Chicago when the dates for the eastern trip were made, but In vain. The near est we got to Chicago University was a game with the Central Y. M. C. A. of Chicago. Perhaps the Wisconsin "Cardinal" Is laboring under tho de lusion that, when we came pretty near ly playing Chicago, we came pretty nearly being defeated and this proxi mity to defeat adds another Btone In Wisconsin's foundation for claiming the championship . Editorial Remarks With the advance of tho baseball season one thing has become painfully appaient to the eye of the observant "fan." The men need new suits. From the motley array of uniforms In evidence every afternoon on the dia mond one not knowing would hardly guess what team was at work, so bad ly worn are the old 'Varsity suits. Tho team this year promises to be a good one and one that will uphold Nebraska honor on the baseball field as It should be, and It is no more than right that they should have some better equip ment in the way of uniforms. No mat ter how good a game a team plays If It is poorly uniformed some of the excel lence of the work Is lost In the un pleasant remembrance of the team's appearance. Every time our team plays a game of ball It is an advertisement for the University and our advertise ments ought to be gotten up in the best shape possible. At Convocation today: Dr. Tuttle, Professor Fling on "Crises In tho World's History," Father Strltch on "Parsifal," and Professor Porslnger on "Three Centuries of American Cos tumes." A case of pay your money and tako your choice. The Interest displayed yesterday morning at the track athletic mass meeting was very gratifying and if tho Interest now aroused does not lag Nebraska's prospects on the track this spring are very bright. Between sixty and seventy men rosigtered for the different events, which Is much more material than we have had to work with for some time. Hard consistent work, however, must be done in order to place Nebraska in track athletics where she is In other branches of sport, but that this endeavor will be forthcoming the enthusiasm shown .yesterday makes quite certain. The Athletic Board at its meeting -Monday night took another step to ward Insuring a successful football sea son for 1905, by re-electing John West over to the position of assistant foot ball coach. Westover's efflclentrwork In this position for the last two years has been In a great measure responsi ble for Nebraska's success on the grid iron. Westover lias Coach Booth's en tire confidence, as has been proven time and again, and he commands the confidence of the whole student body In a like manner. The Board could not have chosen one more thoroughly a master of the game nor one better able to command the confidence of his men. In Offer Colleges The University of Michigan is spending $13,000 for a new field. The Indiana legislature recently ap propriated $100,00 for the State University. Yale is now establishing a branch college In the Province of Hunan, in China. Two hours' university credit is given at Chicago University for services in the orchestra. The Freshman Classes of the Uni versity of Pennsylvania and Columbia University will meet In an Intercol legiate debate this year. King Victor Emmanuel of Italy has conferred upon Professor Charles Eliot Norton of Harvard University the dec oration of grand officer of the Order of the Crown In recognition of his ser vices in translating Dante's works in English, and his sorvices to Italian lit erature In America. By virtue of having defeated the University of Chicago at basketball by a score of 29 to 24 the University of Wisconsin now lays claim to the west ern championship, supporting its claim by the statement that in defeating Chi- Willlams College students have de cided, for the good of the college, to abolish hazing until the end of the college year in June. If the experi ment proves a betterment for the col lege, the rule will be made permanent. The faculty Is of the opinion that the example will be followed by Amherst and Wesleyan.
