A novel method for increasing the usefulness of lumber has been perfect ed In England'. The method consists, In brief, in replacing the air In wood with a solution of beet sugar and re moving the excess of water by a sub sequent drying. The inventor of tho process, Mr. Powell, attains his object by using a large boiler in which the timber to bo treated is placed and the beet-sugar solution pumped In. After the air has all boon replaced by the so lution the wood Is kiln dried. Exam ination of the wood seems to show that the sugar is absorbed Into tho fibre of tho woody tissue and Is not simply held in tho Intercellular spaces. It Is claimed that timber treated in this way Is no longer porous, will not shrink or warp, and is stronger, heav ier, and more durable. Moreover, It Is said that this wood is not liable to dry rot; it is hoped1 that by mixing tho proper poisons with tho sugar bath the wood will bo made resistant to the attacks of fungi and Insects. It Is probable that the Unlveislty of Pennsylvania will play thirteen games this fall instead of tho usual twelve which havo been on her football sched ule. A now policy will bo adopted Instead of a head coach, an advisory board will supervise the work of a field coach and assistants. Interest In public speaking at Knox college is at a high pitch .
