Editorial Remarks
Rumors of Investigating committees
seem to be filling the air. There Is
one now to be formed, so debaters al
lege, to reveal the truo facts of the
caae and find the reasons why Nebras
ka discontinued debating relations
with Kansas. The Kansan.
Such reasons can bo found without
seeking far. Nebraska has substituted
for Kansas a more formidable oppon
ent. Kansas has been threshed three
times In succession. This year we pre
ferred an opponent, more nearly equal
to us in debating strength. This we
found In the University of Iowa.
Moreover, debating in Nebraska is a
matter of truth seeking and truth tell
ing. Such Bpirit has led us to consider
the use of false evidence in forensic
Pedagogical Club.
At the meeting of tho Pedagogical
club last night over 70 membors were
present. Dr. Sanders of the high school
was the speaker, as substitute for Supt
Stephens. Mr. Stephens was called
out of the city at a late hour. 'pr.
Sanders' subject was "Promotions."
He Bald In part: "Promotions should
not bo limited to any special time, but
should take place when the pupils can
profit by the next stage, school Pro
motion is an individual rather than a
collective matter. It depends upon the
pupil's mental and physical strength
and maturity, rather than upon posi
tive acquisition. The basis is rather a
knowledge of the pupil's psychological
state than any such examinations.
Normally, age Is a fair criterion. In
later high school courses the matter
of attainment may some In as a basis
of promotion."
The next meeting will be held about
one month from present date. All In
terested In education are Invited to at
tend these meetings. An oarly topic
will be "The Teachers' Social Life
What to Choose."
