Several important new books have
been recoivod recently by tho Pro

The Forest club will meet Saturday
at 8 p. m. in N 102. M. A. Benedict
will discuss the "Seasoning and Treat
ment of Timber," and B. R. H.d'Allo
mand will givo a talk on the "Forest
Reserves of Nebraska."
Up to the time the paper went to
press last evening the meeting of the
Board of Regents had not been called.
Tho meeting was announced for 2:00
o'clock, but because of delay of trains
only two regents had arrived.
A crowd of about Bixty university
and academy students participated in
a roller skating party at the Auditor
ium skating rink yesterday morning.
The sport of Bomo of tho beginners
terminated In a Virginia "reel."
Professor Bessey has been asked to
review De Vrles' new book, "Species
and Varloties," for tho Now York In
dependent. Somo tlmo ago he reviewed
Professor Morgan's book on tho "Evo
lution and Adaptation," for tho same
journal.
In tho class in advanced Plant
Pathology, ono of tho special Bubjects
of study Is tho decay of timber, In and
out of tho tree. Mr. d'Allemand is the
field collector in this work, since ho
has had much experience In the great
lumber yardB.
Phi Rho Sigma will open their now
quarters in tho Farmers' & Merchants'
block tomorrow night. The new quar
ters are much hotter adapted to the
needs of the society than were the old
quarters in tho Halter block from
which they were driven by firo some
two weeks ago.
The Junior caps have made their ap
pearance on tho campus. Their style
Is something now In the line of class
caps, resembling that of a golf cap,
brown with red lettering. The chair
man of tho cap committee has an
nounced that all juniors who have or
dered caps can receive them at the
Armstrong Clothing Co.
St. Valentine's Day was fittingly ob
served In tho Union Society last Fri
day night. Tho hall was beautifully
decorated with artistic designs appro
priate to tho occasion.
Tho early part of tho ovonlng was
spent in u guessing contost. The win
ner, Miss Mabel Popoon, wbb awarded
a beautiful heart.
After the contest J. E. Bednar spoke
briefly on the subject, "St, Valentine,"
treating of Its origin, history and object.

unprecedented interest has been shown
In farmers Institutes this year and the
demand for lecturers from the depart
ment of agriculture Is far beyond the
supply.
Engineering Notes.
The Mechanical Engineering Depart
ment has recently purchased a com
plete Mahler's Bomb Colorimeter. This
Is a very valuable piece of apparatus
In fuel and oil testing course. Tho
department has bought considerable
valuable apparatus for this course In
tho past two years. An addition of
five moro planlmeters has been neces
sary to meet the increase of students
In engine testing work. The depart
ment now' has fifteen of these expen
sive Instruments.
All engineering students and others
having railroad or engineering friends
should remember that Professor Goss
will be here March 13th. Anyone hav
ing friends who would be Interested
should hand their names to an officer
of tho Engineering Society as they
wish to send them a personal Invita
tion. Professor Goss has a world-wide
reputation In experimental locomotive
