There arc at present over a thousand applications for entrance to the pro posed School of Journalism. R. W. Rose, tho holder of tho world's record for the shot-put, is now in Ith aca, taking stops to entor tho Unlvor sity. That Rose does not come to Cor nell with the idea of devoting his en tire time to athletics is shown by hte fact that for ono year at least ho will be unable to- play on any University team. He will enter the collego of law. The women at Northwestern Univer sity seem to bo very much opposed to the early breakfast hour in one of the dormitories. A recent demonstration 1b said to have taken place in which the young women with horns, bellB and dlshpans led a procession through the corridors of the building before day break. The rule which Is causing so much trouble requires that the dining room doors be closed at 7:25 o'clock In tho morning. President Eliot of Harvard, in a re cent discussion concerning football said: "On tho question whother or not football victories do, as a matter of fact, contribute to the growth or reputation of a college or university, there are evidently two opinions. But If a college or university is primarily a place for training men for honor able, generous and efficient Bervico to the community at largo, there ought not to be more than ono opinion on the question whether a game played under tho actual conditions of football, and with the barbarous ethics" of war fare, can be of a useful element in tho training of young men for such high service."
