Editorial Remarks
At the same hour today for perhaps
tho first time in tho history of the Un
herslty, the four undergraduate classes
and tho graduate students will be assembled-
to enact measures looking to
the same end. A question involving
the welfare of tho University is to be
considered, and it behooves us to con
sider woll and carefully. Sincerity di
rected rightly should characterize these
meotlngs. Both sides of tho question
should be heard. There are somo who
aro not In favor of adopting the honor
system saying that it Is not right for
ono student to toll, to "peach" on an
other. Actuated by this false pride
they are still opposed to placing the
University student body upon Its hon
or, If this honor has to bo maintained
by the, to them questionable, method
of tolling. But this method Is not
questionable. By giving evidence
which loads to tho aprohenslon of any
cheating or "cribbing" a great good Is.
dono to tho student guilty, as woll as
to tho student body. It stops tho one
In his erring course and, though It may
bo thru drastic measures, tho right
courso Is mado clear. It rids tho stu
dent body of just this much wrong,
which otherwise would havo been fos
tered and encouragod by Bllonco.
Tho whole question Is whether wo
shall do what Is right" bocauso it Is
right, or because wo are compelled to.
Shall It bo pollco duty or tho honor
syatom. ' There Is but ono reply and
this reply will bo given unanimously
by every class assembled today.
EXPLANATORY NOTES AS TO ED
UCATION 8, 10, 20.
Education 8. Psychology applied to
education. As a prerequisite students
must have had work In psychology.
Tho course offers a practical study of
educational processes and problems
from tho point of vfew of psychology.
In this connection it emphasizes and
makes practical applications of great
principles of teaching calculated to
give the teacher guidance and assur
ance In working out details of courses
and methods. 2 hours.
Education 10. The high school. A
larger part of the courso than usual
will be devoted to tho American high
school Its history and present status.
A study will bo made of aims, courses,
methods, government, and of special
high school problems of today. Each
year students of the course have been
brought into practical touch with the
city high school and other secondary
schools. This feature will bo promi
nent this year. Members of the courso
can see high school pupils at work,
consult the teachers, and study the
general management of the school. The
present principal has generously given
Ills time to students of the course and
has talked freely with them as to high
school aims. Similar courtesies have
been shown by the authorities of other
secondary schools. Equal opportuni
ties may bo expected this year. 1 or 2
hours.
Education 20. Tho Sunday school.
(I) A study of the pedagogy of the
gospels as a basis. (2) Applications to
the Sunday school (one of tho most
prominent topics in recent educational
discussion). A study will ho made of
Sunday school organization, manage
ment, lesson series, and methods. Sun
day schools of this vicinity will be is
ited. Students will bo brought Into
touch with the notable books and ar
ticles on tho Sunday school whUh have
appeared in tho last year or two. There
will bo lectures, discussions, etc
1 hour. A second hour may bo taken
by giving notice to tho instructor.
