DISCUSSES ART EXHIBIT.
Dr. Fling Points Out Advantages
of Visiting Exhibit.
Convocation period yesterday was oc
cupied by Professor Fling, who talked
upon the Art Exhibit which Ib now be
ing held in the art rooms.
He began by saying that It Beems to
be the impression that those annual
exhibits are money making schemes,
and that there Is some kind of a graft
behind them. This Is not true. No
ono receives any monetary compensa
tion, even the officers of the associa
tion serving without remuneration. The
plan of the association Is to cultivate
an art taste, and to do so It has to
struggle agalnnt adverse clrcum
Btam cs. People as a rule do not care
fotj art. They are not interested In It
and it does not take bold of them as
something practical does. However,
the association is building up a taste
for the finer arts and Lincoln Is known
to artists as an art center, while Oma
ha, Denver and the other western cities
are not. The oxhlbt this season Is
better than ever before. It repre
sents the work of the best American
artists and should be seen and studied
to bo appri elated. We should care for
ait. If wo do not there Is very little
prospect for higher things for this
country.
The students have always supported
the art exhibits here. There has been
no caiiBc to complain on that score, but
...icy should continue to do so. A sea
son ticket costs only 50 cents. This will
not cause :ny great privtation to any
one. If, however, anyone considers
that It will cause too great a drain
on his purse the association has pro
vided for his objection. If ho will
sell four $1 tickets or eight 50 cent
tickets he will be given a season tick
et. Everyone who can should aid the
asociation, since a great deal of ex
pence has been brought on by this ex
hibit and this must be paid.
Agricultural Meeting.
During the week commencing Janu
ary 18th, there will be a large number
of agricultural meetings neld in Lin
coln, of which the authorities at the
State Farm will have charge. All of
these meetings are in the nature of
annual association meetings represent
ing various state stock and agricul
tural associations. We understand that
most of them will be held at the State
Farm, although several will take place
in the University chapel.
