While Professor Smith was at tho International Live Stock Exposition, about two weeks ago, he purchased a fine Abordecn-Angus steer, -which ia now n member of the bovine family at the State Farm. It la tho inten tion to fit him for noxt year's ahow and if he fulfils hia promises, will no doubt maintain tho univeralty'a ropu tutloa as a producer of fine .stock. A paper ia being circulated among faculty and students at the school of agriculture for tl.t purpose of getting subscriptions to a Tund to be used for improving tho nthlotic fiold. This is a deserving cause and is receiving lib eral encouragement from all concerned. With proner improvement the athletic J field at tho farm is destined to be come mo pnue or the school and the university. It is located oj a level plot just north of the experiment sta tion buildings and is almost entirely surround! by trees. Tho parlors at the College Settle ment hou5-e. Twentieth and M streets were nicely filled Tuesday evening. December 20th, with friends and pn renta to witness the Christmas pro gram given by the Girls' flub. The first number was a "Welcome Song" Ly twenty-fivo girls from soven to four teen years of age. The romainder of tho hour was taken up with recita tions and music. Since early Novem ber tho weekly meetings under the direction of the College Settlement committeo of tho Y. W. C. A. have been taken no in practicing for this entertainment. After the program Santa Claua appeared with a bag of candj a.id nuts for oach of tho girls. Ex-State Superintendent Fowler ha asked the loading educational institu tions of the state to give an opinion ot the effects of football and college athletics on the educational system of Nebraska. Willi few exceptions, it was declared that Toot ball and all the other forms of athletics had acted as a stimulant to scholarship, institutional pride and local enthusiasm. Many educators said thnt the sport ha been distinctly helpful. From Wesleyan came the news that tobacco and football were distinct ovilb. On the same tampus dancing, s weaiing and other mild amusements are prohibited and the students have been known to steal away to many a gay-affair in Lincoln's capital. The chancellor of Croighton univer sity at Omaha declared that football should be mado "less strenuous and more humane." -With this change he approved of tho gamo and thought that the effects of the sport were on the whole, beneficial.
