New Library at Stanford.
Foundations of the new university
library, the last of the largo structures
to be built to complete the structural
Echume as originally planned by the
founders of the Stanford university, aro
now well under way and the work will
bo loutjnued as rapidly as possible.
In style of architecture tho new li
brary will combine tho Spanish of tho
buildings of tho quadranglo with the
Romanesque of tho gymnasium, and in
general appearance will bo much moro
ornate than any of tho other buildings
of the university. The ground dimen
sions of the main structure will bo
304 feet in length, with a width
through the wings of 98 feet and
through tho stackroom of 200 feet. The
circular adldtlon to tho rear embracing
this stackroom will have a diameter
of 132 feet. In height tho building
will be three stories and basement,
unrounded by a beautiful glace domo
cf 90 feet In diameter, which will afford
excellent light to tho general reading
room below. The total height from
the ground line to the top of tho dome
vlll be 141 feet.
The contract for the laying of tho
foundations calls for an expenditure of
$25,000, and tho cost of the stone and
trick work will be $217,241. The cost
of the interior decoration and equip
ment of the new structure will prob
ably Increase the entire cost to about
$600,000.

Prof. Sweezey's Lecture Enjoyed
by a Large Crowd.
Convocation period yesterday was
ghen over to Professor Sweezey, who
delivered the first of a series of lec
tures on Astronomy. His subject was
the planet Mars, and the lecture was
illustrated by a number of lantern
vIowh.
Prol. Sweezey took up the differ
ences between farth and Mais and
spoke of the difficulty of getting views,
even with the best telescopes. Tho at
mospheric conditions and probable
vegetation was discussed. A compari
son with the moon showed many and
Interesting facts concerning this, the
most Important planet. The canal sys
tem was spoken of at some length and
opinions of leading astronomers given.
Tho lecturer gavo his opinion that If
Mars Is inhabited that the Inhabitants
bae a higher Intelligence than ours.
In conclusion Professor Sweezey
stated that most of what we think we
know about the planets, is only theory,
though well confirmed by observation
with telescopes. Another ot the series
is promised1 as soon as some new
slides are received. One commendable
feature of the period was that the
doors were closed when tho lecture
commenced, thus preventing interrup
tion, which is so common by a number
of our unthinking students.
