Foundations of the new university library, the last of the largo structures to be built to complete the structural Echume as originally planned by the founders of the Stanford university, aro now well under way and the work will bo loutjnued as rapidly as possible. In style of architecture tho new li brary will combine tho Spanish of tho buildings of tho quadranglo with the Romanesque of tho gymnasium, and in general appearance will bo much moro ornate than any of tho other buildings of the university. The ground dimen sions of the main structure will bo 304 feet in length, with a width through the wings of 98 feet and through tho stackroom of 200 feet. The circular adldtlon to tho rear embracing this stackroom will have a diameter of 132 feet. In height tho building will be three stories and basement, unrounded by a beautiful glace domo cf 90 feet In diameter, which will afford excellent light to tho general reading room below. The total height from the ground line to the top of tho dome vlll be 141 feet. The contract for the laying of tho foundations calls for an expenditure of $25,000, and tho cost of the stone and trick work will be $217,241. Convocation period yesterday was ghen over to Professor Sweezey, who delivered the first of a series of lec tures on Astronomy. His subject was the planet Mars, and the lecture was illustrated by a number of lantern vIowh. Prol. Sweezey took up the differ ences between farth and Mais and spoke of the difficulty of getting views, even with the best telescopes. Tho at mospheric conditions and probable vegetation was discussed. A compari son with the moon showed many and Interesting facts concerning this, the most Important planet. The canal sys tem was spoken of at some length and opinions of leading astronomers given. Tho lecturer gavo his opinion that If Mars Is inhabited that the Inhabitants bae a higher Intelligence than ours. In conclusion Professor Sweezey stated that most of what we think we know about the planets, is only theory, though well confirmed by observation with telescopes. Another ot the series is promised1 as soon as some new slides are received. One commendable feature of the period was that the doors were closed when tho lecture commenced, thus preventing interrup tion, which is so common by a number of our unthinking students.
