The Sophomore class met yesterday
morning in U 10G. No business of
great Importance was transacted, but
reports from a number of committees
were heard. C. A. Sunderlin, chair
man of the hop eommitte reported
substantially according to the article in
another column of today's Nebrnskan.
Reports were also heard from the cap
commitee on the inter-class athletic
board. The Interests of the class
In the year's junlon annual were en
trusted to the committee recently ap
pointed by President Wolf for that
purpose. This was the first meeting of
trie class presided over by President
Wolf, who made a good impression.
HOP MEN SPEND MONEY.
Elaborate Preparations in Pro
gress for Sophomore Hop.
The annual sophomore hop, to be
held Friday evening in Fraternity hall
promises to be one of the most enjoy
able functions of the university year.
As it is the first regular dance of the
year, many .who otherwise would not
attend will be present. The commit
tee in charge has spared neither pains
nor money In making the affair a suc
cess and the number in attendance is
expected to be unusually large.
"Tommy" has been engaged for the
evening, and will serve punch some
thing unusual for a sophomore hop. In
addition to this Eddie Walt's orchestra
will furnish the music. A large num
ber of tickets have already been sold,
and many students arem aklng ar
rangements to attend.
Gold by Telephone.
Among the scientific notes in Col
lier's for October 15, is the following
rather amazing announcement.
A new way of prospecting has been
tried experimentally, and Is. reaching
the point where it is practically use
ful. Tho method Is based on the differ
ences In the electrical conducivity of
the earth due to the presence of ore
deposits. Most oreB are much better
conductors of electricity than the soil
and rocks, although .some others are
almost Insulators. ,
In making use of these facts, to lo
cate beds of ore two electrodes are
grounded about one hundred yards
apart. In the circuit is an Induction
coll with a glass condenser and two
spark gaps. The current as It passes
through the ground Is tested by two
telephone receivers connected to port
able electrodes which are usually
grorrnTled about Boventy feet apart. The
make and break of the current In pass
ing through the ground Is heard In the
telephone as ticks. As the electrodes
attached to the telephones are moved
about, the variations in the Intensity
of the tapping in the telephones gives
an Indication of the presence and posi
tion of the ore deposits. Although tho
method Is not out of the experimental
stage, yet it seems to promise much
for Itself in the future.
