In Other Colleges
The following Horns from two of
our exchanges will be of Interest to
Nebraskans. The first two are from
the Missouri Independent, the last
from the Pacific Wave, of the Univer
sity of Washington:
W. W. Cook, assistant professor of
law, is a graduate of Columbia Unl
erslty, receiving the degree of A. B.
in 1894, A. M. in 1899 and M. U In
1901. For two years Professor Cook
held the Tindall traveling fellowship
in mathematics, during which time he
studied in Germany. After his stay
abroad he .entered the department of
Public Law at Columbia University
and for the past three years has been
teaching law at the University of Ne
braska. Wilbur F. Starr has been elected
musical director of the university and
Instructor In music in the Teachers'
College. Professor Starr graduated
from Do Pauw University in 1894 and
for1 some time after studied under Sav
age, Flchandler, Kroft, Meyer, Web
ster and other masters. For some
years he was connected with Castle
Square and English Metropolitan
Grand Opera companies, singing lead
ing baritone roles in all the principal
cities of the continent. Recently Pro
fessor Starr has been connected with
the musical departments of Nebraska
and Nebraska Wesloyan Universities.
Robert E. Morltz. Ph. D.. the new
professor of mathomatlcs, comes from
the University of Nebraska. He re
ceived the bachelor's degree from
Hastings College In 1892. In 189C Chi
cago granted him the master's degree,
and In 1901 Nebraska added the doc
tor's degree. The year of 1901-1902
Professor Morltz spent In study at
Strassburg, Paris, Lelpslg and Goot
tlngen. In Nebraska, where he was
assistant professor. Doctor Morltz was
held by his associates to be one of the
ablest men in the department. In ad
dition to his duties as instructor, he
has written extensively for mathe
matical and scientific journals, pub
lishing no fewer than fourteen articles
involving research work. Washing
ton Is to bo congratulated on his ac
cession to tho faculty.
Columbia College Is to have a new
building for the School of MincB.
Adolph Lewishon. president of the
United Metal Sellln Co., recently gave
$250,000 for the building. It will be
placed on the Broadway side of the
quadrangle.
This now building will enable the
students at Columbia to study the
practical side of mining. They will no
longer be obliged to travel in tho
west to gain this phase of their course.
A mine will be dug under the uni
versity campus and the students will
take tholr turns at shaft sinking.
