The portrait, costing more than $1,000, Ib the work of William M. Chase of New York, and Is the gift of the class of 93. the' first to be graduated under Dr. Andrews' administration. "The scene at Hie unveiling was most Impressive. The gift was presented In beholf of the class by its president. Dean Alexander Melkeljohn, whose eulogy deeply stirred the men who had 6tt under Andrews as teacher and president. 'Classes,' said Dean Melkel john, 'would have fought for the prhl lcgc of making this gift; but we were "Benny's" first freshmen.' It was as the great man that the dean eulogized the hero of twenty years of Brown stu dents. 'I wish,' said he, 'that I could bring every future freshman before this portrait and let him behold a man and say to bim, "IfMhore Is any man- )MM Stzeet mare - no less. yyy m y jfc 3fr)fc3fr StBjE hood In you. look at him and he will eee It. If there is any meanness in you, he will see It and shame you out of It." ' 'When Dean Miekejjohn finished and I he features of 'Benny' weie disclosed, the audience rose with one long cheer, or rather yell, which was followed by (lass cheeis In succession. In the suf- lused eyes ofclass mates in '70 and of a long line of men who as students had been inspired by him, the affection lor Dr. Andrews was clearly written Graduates of fifty years say they never saw such a tribute paid at Brown. At the president's reception In Sayles hall last night everyone tarried before the picture. "The classes from '90 to 1903, in clusive, which ate" the commencement dinner In the gymnasium, sent this message to Dr. Andrews through M. M. Fogg, '94, a professor at the Uni versity of Nebraska, who had brought Dr. Andrews' greeting: 'Toll Benny," said Colonel H. Anthony Dyer, '94, the chairman, 'that so long as the light he lit on this hill shall burn, we shall hold In our hearts him who made Brown Into a great institution, bound the students to him. and, though dis pensing stern justice, became the most beloved college president In the east. What Andrews, the man. means to Brown mon appears from Dean Melkel John's eulogy, which Is reproduced here Instill from the Providence Journal: "Mr. President: I rise' on behalf of the class of '93, to present to the uni versity a portrait of President An drews.
