Academy Notes.'
The annual opening reception takes
place Saturday ovonlng. From eight
i to nine heads of departments in the
university. School of Music and the.
Lincoln Dental Collego and the resi
dent parents of students will bo wel
come. From a o'clock till well, till
later tho academy students take en
tire possession. During the faculty
hour Mrs. L. A. Sherman will serve
Ices and dtuing the student Influx Mrs.
T. H. MrGahey. tho mother of Miss
t Florence McGahey, will preside. Guests
will be served by Misses Mabel Ash
ley, Florenco Hirst, Helen Wajgh, Zola
Dellecker, Anna Hoofer and Jane Blan
ihaid. A mandolin quartette will strive
for a hearing with the social chat. It
Is unfortunate that the university has
announced a function for tho same
hour, bat as the academy rarely with
draws defeated It will have it out on
this occasion.
Speaking of defeat make3 the foot
ball men look sad. Despite an ad
miiablc coach, an energetic manager
and a popular, earnest captain such
as Messrs Graves, Myers and Miller
have proven themselves to be foot
ball languishes. The disagreeable ne
cessity for dismissal of the old coach,
delayed the practice and discouraged
the old men. The boys announce a
heart-to-hearl conference with the stu
dents at char el Monday morning. The
real difficulty is that so many of last
year's team have entered the uni
versity. Tho new men. although so
numerous that class rooms are in
adequate, feel little enthusiasm as yet
for academy enterprises. The Omaha
and York games demand better ma
terial than has yet appeared and un
less the new men get out to practice
the prospects for a good season so
bright two weeks ago will take a
tumble.
With this exception the opening
week has been very encouraging to
fi lends of the academy. The increase
In new regular students has been re
markable. The chemistry ( lass has
jumped from thirty last year to forty
four this year. The Caesar class num
bers over forty and the new course In
argumentation, given by Mr. G. A. I.ee,
is ery flattering to this enthusiastic
teacher.
Announcement is now being made
of threo correspondence courses, two
in English by Dr. U A. Sherman and
Prof. F. A. Stuffand one in American
History by Prof. H. W. Caldwell
Adjunct Professor C. E. Persingor
nnd Instructor I . E. Aybworth. These
courses are so important and so much
of an innovation that their descrip
tion must be deferred to another dav.
