;ha Zeta fraternity was held In -the
ordinary of the I.imlcll hotel Tues

of the Senior class; 10. G. Montgomery
and Val Keyser of Junior class; some
of the honorary members from th" Ag
riculture faculty, Dr. C. E. IJessoy and
Chancellor Andrews, who are also
honorary members.
Chancellor Andrews, In his usual
pleasing way entertained the members
and guests by a response to the toast.
"What Shall the Harvest He." A'fter
a few witicisms the hancell:r pre
sented optimistic views re'atlve to the
outcome of the present movement fav
oring agricultural education. Dean
Hessey in response to the toast, "Retro
spects," Interested his listeners by re
viewing the history of agricultural ed
ucation in the University of Nebraska.
Many of the difficulties encountered
were iidly described among which
was the effort to pass a bill In the
legislature providing Tor the sale of
the Unlveisity farm. Dr. Ilessey, then
acting chancellor, was the cause of the
defeat of this bill on the day of its
final passage. Dr. Hrssey attributes
much of the recent success of the agri
cultural department and the fact that
its faculty is made up of young men
full of vigor and enthusiasm for their
work.
Associate Dean Burnett gave an elo
quent talk upon - i-Tospects. During
the course of his remarks he empha
sized the fact that agricultural educa
tion will receive proper support so long
as the state is convinced that "some
thing is doing." Professor Smith in
responding to the toast, "Balanced Ra
tions," made a strong plea favoring a
broad liberal education for the farm
er, both for financial and social rea
sons. Professor Davisson in an im
promptu told of the rapid growth in
attendance at tne School of Agricul
ture, and Professor Avery livened up
the occasion oy reciting some of his
experiences as a student in Germany.
"The Alpha Zeta Goat;" "The Aims of
the Fraternity." "The Whole Cheese,"
and "Grafting," were each responded
to by members of the active chapter.
The topics were suggestive of work in
which the speakers are engaged as stu
dent assistants in the School of .Agri
culture. Among the invited guests
were Regents Teeters and Whitmore,
of Valley, ihe latter also responded
to a toaBt, in which he sustained his
reputation as a clever after dinner
speaker.
The Alpha Zeta fraternity Is a com
paratively new national organization
for agricultural students of college
grade. The Nebraska chapter is the
first one organized west of the Missis
sippi river. Only agricultural students
registered for degrees in the University
who attain high scholarship in all sub
jects, arc eligible. The active chapter
in Nebraska consists of ten members
from the Junior and Senior classes of
tho Agricultural School. '
