The follow ii.g loiter was sent by
l'totessor Batber to teachers in the
state and calls attention to special
phabtb of the Suinnur Session:
Dear Fillow Workers:
For sonic years my studies have
rendered it impossible tor me "to re
main in Lincoln and give Instruction
in the Summer Session of the Unlver
bity. The growing importance, how
ever, of 1 atin, the increased attention
given to it in the high schools, and the
tact that a number of new Latin gram
mars have recently been published, rc
quiiing some explanations, adjust
ments, and consideration of new meth
ods, have induced me to remain this
summer and work wi .i the teachuis
ot 1 atin, to tiie end that our com
bined efforts may still further improve
our work. We are co-laborers in the
same fields, parts of the same public
bchool sjstem, and we can best in
creabo the rflhiency of that sbtem and
make it a still greater factor in im
pioving the citizenship of our state,
by working together to this common
end.
1 offer three reading courses and a
lectuio couise, in all fifteen hours. See
catalogue for details. Credit is given
lor the number of hours done. Th
work is adapted, primarily, to teach
ers. The lecture course (three hours)
treatB of methods, both the commonly
accepted and the new. The reading
courses apply the principles diBcusseu
in the lecturo courses. Any grammar
may be used according to preference
An attempt will be made to adjust the
new grammars to one another. 1 shall
glvo a public illustrated let-lure on
uome as it appears today, and other
illustrated lectures before Latin teach
ers on Pompeii and ancient Italian life.
Such subjects as tho following are
treated: The fora, temples, walls, for
luications, triumphal arches, collose
um, aqueducts, waterworks, sewers,
streets, tombs, tho ADDian road, the
ancient Roman house, household uten
sils, wall -decorations, toilet articles,
dress, methods of writlnc. etc.
Besides these lecturos, tho collection
of phootographs and lantern slides
tnat belong to this department of the
University will be accessible to
teachers. They throw a great deal of
light on ancient Roman life, and make
the daily readings imich clearer and
class room work more Interesting. This
phase of tho work may be carried on
btill further by study In tne classical
lltnary, which will be open to teach
ers. Particularly will this latter work
be helpful to teachers In making pur
chase for high school libraries. Dur
ing the Bcssion I shall conduct a
series -of round table conferences on
subjects buggebted by members of the
c lasses, and by my own experience, it
is thought that these may be helnful in
settling some of the perplexing ques
tions of the class room and the teach
er's work.
I thoroughly appreciate the good
work being done by the I-atin teachers
of the state, but none of us will claim
that it can not be still further im
proved. We can keep up our interest
in teaching Latin only by continuing
our studies in it, and we can contlnii'j
to imnrove our teaching only by keen-
ting alive our interest in the subject
I hope to see a good attendance.
The details of these courses aro
given in the catalogue of the Summer
Session. If you have not received a
copy I shall be pleased to send you
one, if you will drop be a card.
I desire also, to call your attention
to the excursion (one week) to the Na
tional Educational association and the
St. 1 ouis exposition, open only to reg
istered students and instructors. This
offers you a rare opportunity to visit
Loth of these at a very little expense
Very cordially yours,
GROVE B. BARBER.
Head of Department of Latin, Univer
sity of Nebraska.
