the Freshman Caps.

Your correspondent of yesterday be
gins with the positive statement that
"the Freshmen will wear nips" It is
not my desire to raise a controversy on
this point, and I am picpared to ac
quiesce in the proposition I am, in
view of the stand which the first-year
men are taking, ready to ioihmIo that
they will wear caps; but. praised be
Allah, will It be more than once9
Moreover, I am willing to gruit the
further contention of "A Fr shman"
that his class has the largest organiza
tion in the University To be sure thr
class is a large one Consider, alas
the quality! I deny flatly that the
Frci-hmen class is the most p idiotic In
school. I solicit proof for the state
ment! And then In general. I would call the
attention of "A Freshman" to the point
that class insignia must nol be con
sidered merely as badges of patriot
ism or of class spirit They must also
bo held as symbolical of something
donp. something accomplished by the
class represented by them The Sopho
more class has experienced a year of
strenuous happenings, and the head
gear which it has adopted as a symbol
of its organization stands nlso as a
reminder of its record of the year that
is already past. Even more rs this
true of the two upper classes, and It is
n grave mistake to say nothing of the
insult, to presume for a moment that
the insignia of the Junior and Senior
classes represent alone the love and pa
triotism of their wearers to the Uni
versity of Nebraska. Is "A Fresh
man" so blind to the real significance
of class insignia that be cannot real
ize that they stand before all else as a
monument to the deeds and accom
plishments of the classes which they
ic present?
Next year "A Freshman" and bis
brothers may wear claBH caps If they
wish, and no one will protest, hast
of all today's Sophomore's. Next year
caps may mean something for our
present Freshmen. But now. let them
bend their energies to the making of
n record of which they may well be
proud in the future. I et them real ze
that caps this year can but destroy the
flgniflcanee of the insignia of oth r
classes, without accomplishing any
thing for the Freshmen save the pub
lication of the self-conceit and selfish
vanity of the members.

fused permission to participate In the
Big Nino track meet at Chicago la
without foundation. Nebraska has
never made application to participate
In any such meet, hence she has not
suffered another blast to her hopes.
The report conveying the erroneous
Impression says:

nual Intercollegiate conference track
meet to be held on Marshall field June

Fleager of Northwestern university
president, and Bvan Hoi brook of Mich
igan, secretary and treasurer. It was
decided at the meeting that only mem
bers of the 'big nine' would be allowed
to compete, the applications of Ne
braska university, Ileloit and Notre
Dame being refused."
