This calendar we will en ('.eavr r to keep as complete as posbibW and make it include all important events of general inteiett In the ynl- fruity. Suggestions will be received with thanks, and anyone having in view any event concerning University peoplo. that is fitting and appropriate can have it listed in the calendar by merely handing us a notice ot it. Smoking at University functions Is r.( meth lug that should be dlscountcn antet' It Is not essential to anyone's plen&ute upon such occasions, and is in fait a nuisance and ontlroly out of place. Complaints are made ot the i n aW in e of the practice at the Senior Pre. ni , and wo hoan expressions of dlhgun regarding it We do not select t'ie Senior Prom, as a glaring example, lor It is but one instance among otheis All of our University functions aie con i. ii( led on a comparatively high plane, and tho elimination of smoking at tiiebe would make a step of improve ment. The whole case rests with the men themselves, and their action will bo received with appioxal If they txer i lse the proper lestraint In this regard Tomorrow the Rhodes Scholarship examinations begin, and we trust thnt eery student In the University has had the matter brought prominently before his attention. Kveiy effort pos sible has been made to adwitlse these i xamlnatlons. Thore will be no diffi culty at all In getting entered. All that is expected of any candidate is to how up tomorrow at the place of ex amination, armed with a fountain pen. No ono need bo timorous about enter ing, as the examination Is merely a qtiaHlying one, so oven if he has not bad tlnio for a thorough review of the branches ho desires to ho examined in. he still has a show of Buccess. Viewed lrom a certain standpoint, the prize held out Is very desirable, aml'nuy stu den having tho qualifications, who de sires tho kind' of training that is of fered, will not be acting amiss by showing up for tho examinations. The merging of the three debating clubs Into ono organization should bo productive of good results. If a com plete unification of all the Interests of each individual body were thus effect ed, then, there could be no doubt of the success of the now organization. But it Is not unlikely UuU there has been Some- waste, as this might be ex pected, and must bo taken into consid eration. However, ono largo and com pact organization has better chances for success than three-smaller bodies, each having an independent claim. Three Interests working In harmony ought to yield better results than jach ono striving independent to preserve an entity of its own. We hope that the new organization will succeed In arousing additional enthusiasm in de bating; for the training that Is given is lost upon no ono inditing a consci entious effort to profit by It. It has plenty of room to work In and we hope to see eacji member working enthusi astically in its Interests. O Heady made orations and essas can be fccured at reasonable rates from eastern parties, who evidently find that their profession yields sufficient returns to enable them to subsist. Yankee in genuity has been responsible for so many innovations that a person no langer Is hururlfcd when some one of a unique and astounding nature is sud denly sprung. Hut tho idea of a syndi cate being organized, no matter how limited Its membership may be, for tho purpose of supplying orations and es says as articles of merchandise natural ly leads one to wonder as to what can come next. Wo can not help but think that if a student is so far com pelled by lack of mental equipment as to look to others for assistance, that there Is absolutely no excuse for pla giarism when a reasonably good article can be secured at a moderate rate. At least we think that It would be ruin ous economy for him to risk his stand ing and reputation when a small out lay would preclude the necessity of so doing Farewell Talk. I)i Fletcher L. Wharton, who hah just resigned the pastoiate of the St Paul's M. B church, o f this citv. gave a farewell address to University men Sunday afternoon in the chapel. He spoke on "The Possibilities of Young Men of Today." Two special poinls v.cio brought out in his talk, namely The call of the Christian college man to build up civilization in the Orient, and the call of the Christian voting man to his home town to better his former associates A large crowd heard Dr. Wharton's addiess and bach farewell to the man who has been so prominent among University men for the nast sevcrul years. Mr. Harry Whaiton, son of Dr. What ton. sang Two selections, which won the hearty applause of the audience SENIORS. Will you kindly pay me the tw dol lars for the Senior play at once.
