to be such a good man for this work
that he became one of the foremost of
ficers In the division, and is frequent
ly callcel upon to talte up the duties of
the chief. All this time he continued
his studies of lichens.'which he had be
gun under Dr Ressey's instruction in
the University, and here again he made
himself a master of the subject . He
died suddenly December 2(1, 19(H) His
large collection of lichens, and his
botanical library have been deposited
in the herbal ium of the University,
malting It the most complete of any
In the. country. Mr. Williams was one
of the charter members of the Botani
cal Seminar.
Miss- Christine Bednar. 'US. who is
now teaching mathematics and Latin
in the Mindcn high school, writes a
friend entertainingly of her experience
there. She reports that sue has been
ic-electd for the next year, and with
Ltmio needed changes in the curricu
lum looks forward to a year even more
successful than the present one has
hem. She is sure that at least four
of the t-lxteen giaduates for this year
will enter the university next fall, and
M-vpral others at a later period. Miss
Bednar will be remembered as one
of the Ftrong graduates oT the Uni
versity and her success is just what
her friends expected.
C. A. Fisher, a former lellow in the
geological department, and now en
gaged in work for the U. S. geologi
e n 1 smvey. is at prefsnt doing work in
Ni w .Mexico, near the Mexican bor
der. A letter was recently received
from him by the geology department
Prof. V X. Gould. A. M. ISJUli, and
now of Oklahoma University, is about
to moe Into very line quarters that
hae been pnpaied for the geology
department of. which he is the head.
Academy Debate To-night.
Thlb evening the Academy team will
debate the Lincoln Y. M. C. A. at the
bitter's gymnasium. The Academy
teim, which Is composed of D. P. De
Young. H. G Myers and A H. Miller,
will have the affirmative of the foV
lowing question. "Resohed, That it
would be to the inteicats of both coun
tries; if Canada were to be annexed to
the United Elates." Under the training
of C. P. Craft the Academy boys- have
worked haul and conscientiously for
several Aceks. They realize that the
task is no easy one. but are detet
mined to give their opponents plenty
to do, no matter which side gains the
division. Yesterday afternoon thej
were busily engaged in preparing
charts to be used in illustration of
their polnts. Mr. Craft has inspired
them with a thoroughness and accur
acy which w'ill always stand thorn in
good Elead. Yesterday mcrning a final
rally war held at the Academy in the
Interests of the debate. Addresses were
made by H W. Scott. II. G. Myers and
A. IL Miller and encouraging remarks
ventured by the principal.
