Batten at Chapel. Rev. Samuol Z. Batten spoke during convocation yesterday morning on the question, "What to dt with doubts." He spoko of this as a provalllng caso with students, most of us having been trained In' a Christian, homo, where the Influences were such that wo scorned to know and) take for granted' without any investigation, the divinity of God. When wo came to school and entered further into tho services and scram bled for the cause of everything with a sequence of plausible reasons, we were led1 to doubt. Religion could not bo taken for granted In these days, It must bo worked! out and yot It Is full of mystery like all the other things of tho universe. Nothing seems to bo fully worked out. Tho whole world Is nothing but a mystic system, full of interrogation points. Don't magnify the doubts. The things we can see are not to bo doubted if we live high, noble, manly lives, which is a part of religion. We can not doubt its value because we see Its fruits. If Christ was a high, noble character, bet ter that wo should pattern after him than to doubt his existence from di vine authority. The talk was very helpful and sug gestive of many ideas worthy of deep thought and careful study. Alumnus Honored. Frank S. Phllbrlck, who graduated from the University In 18&7 and took his M. A. degree in' 1899, has been ap pointed to an Instructorshlp in Gov ernment at Harvard. Mr. Phllbrlck Is one of the most brilliant and) well versed men that our University has ever graduated1 and1 the news of his success will bo received' with gladness by those of our faculty and alumni who were well acquainted with himi He has taught here, being a follow in Ameri can history in 1898-99. In 1902 he took his Ph. D. degree at Harvard', having served as both fellow and scholar there. During the post two years he has been a student in Europe, having studied at Berlin, Paris, London' and other cities, and traveled1 extensively In Ger many, Italy and' Spain. The subject of both his theses for tho master's and doctor's degree was "The Relation of the United States to Cuba." A Favorable Comment. Dr. Luckey's book on tho "Profes sional Training of Teachers" is re viewed In last month's number of The Pedagogical Seminary. After a treat ment of the general purposes of the book and a review of tho subject mat ter, the following comment Is made: ' "Tho book as a whole will bo found u valuable one for reference and will save students along similar lines of research many hours of work. In thus collating so much valuable material, Prof. Luckey has rendered a valuable service to the students of education." Glee Club Concert May 6.
